G'day,

I'd agree that one can generally get international money orders etc but
last time I checked they're pretty expensive in Oz.

About AU$20 IIRC - and the way our banks charge it can only go up. Western
Union money transfer is VERY expensive (I made an ebay sale to a bloke in
Belgium and he paid via WU - ages ago but I think it was around $AU30 or so
(he wanted to use them - the cost is born by the sender) and fidlly since I
had to get to the travel agent that was an agency. the cost and mucking
around of international cheques/money orders would be a real disincentive if
I had to rely on paying by that method.

Fortunately, credit card is fine by me.

Paypal has worked well for me - but then I've only used it for ebay and
the odd purchase, and have used it for Society of Ancients membership. I've
no experience with Paypal at the business level tho so I can only defer to
Rob's knowledge. FWIW when I set up my Paypal account I think "foreign"
users had to supply credit card details as part of verification. That was a
few years ago so I don't know if it has changed.

Cheers
Bern

If one person is confused, that means at least another few dozen are as
well. Better to clarify the text on the page and eliminate the confusion
than have to answer the question here or via tech support another bunch of
times. :-)

V2.2c won't be mysteriously disappearing from the world. So you can
definitely continue using V2.2c. I'm guessing that it's possible a couple
of out-of-print games won't have their data files updated for V3.0 right
away. So V2.2c will still be needed for those games - in the interim, at
least. I've considered providing new users of AB3 the option to obtain a
free AB2 license if they want it, just in case of a situation like this,
but that entails a lot of work on the server to integrate two disparate
mechanisms (the antiquated AB2 system and the nifty one we use for CV/AB3).
So that's likely to not happen until after AB3 is released (if at all).

Given the sweeping changes to the engine and the complexities of converting
V2 data files to V3, my best guess is that the conversion will NOT be done
automatically within AB3. Instead, it will likely be done via a separate
conversion tool made available for authors. So, assuming the data files you
author convert fully to V3, you'll be able to maintain those files in V2
and run the converter on them each time you release a new update.
NOTE! The above is my BEST GUESS as of today, based on incomplete
information. Please don't consider any of this as absolute.

One thing to be aware of is that auto-converted V2 data files will probably
have glaring missing functionality. Some of the features that users will
quickly find invaluable in AB3 will simply not be present. This is because
those features don't exist in V2 - NOT because things aren't converted across.

So I'm guessing that most authors - who will also want to use those
features themselves when creating army lists - will pretty quickly find it
to be a major nuisance trying to support both AB2 and AB3. Either
functionality will be missing under V3 or the maintenance of both versions
will be come a headache.

I'm just trying to avoid any assumptions from being established now that
will cause frustration in the future. Our ultimate goal with AB3 is to make
a complete separation from V2. It will simplify everything for everyone
(ourselves, authors, and users) once we accompish the transition. And the
new functionality in AB3 ought to make it easy for users to justify the
transition. At least, that was the impression I got from the reactions when
we previewed AB3 at KublaCon a short while ago. :-)

If internation PayPal accounts still require a credit card, then PayPal
isn't a viable option for us to even consider. Does anyone know if this is
still the case?

Thanks, Rob

AFAIK, Non-US accounts require a card (credit or debit) because they can't
upload funds via a bank like the Americans can. Paypal are looking into
other countries being allowed to fund their accounts via a bank account. The
only ways I've found to fund your Paypal account is to have two accounts
with account #1 pays via card to account #2, or you pay a friend with your
card and he/she sends the payment to your Paypal account.

Why is using a creditcard via Paypal not a viable option??

At least in the UK, you can hook up a bank account to your Paypal and
transfer money without needing a credit card. This is a fairly new thing,
they only implemented it in the last few months IIRC. I'm not sure about
other countries; I think they have to make a separate agreement with
whoever runs the banks in each country, which explains why it took them so
many years to get it working for the UK.

Well, I personally did it with my UK bank account and UK paypal account a
couple of months ago, so it's definitely possible to do.
