Nope this is how currently d20 works. NOT Hero Lab but d20 works this way.

Nothing wrong with what your doing other than expecting paper to "look" totally different than the windows UI. If you added the spell twice in the HL software and you see it "twice" in the software why would you want the paper to look different?

I guess my statement makes more sense when you realize most people use HL software at the game table and don't use "paper" anymore. In addition for the 'most' part its meant that what you see in the software is the same as what gets printed.

The d20 game system is very out of date making use of new features of the HL software.

I get what you're saying, I wasn't taking into account that the output would be quite that literal but I understand why it is. It makes sense to me now.

As for looking different than the UI, for the character sheets themselves I get why you want to make sure nothing is unduly edited. My confusion was because I would have thought most people used the full spell description page in place of something like the SPC source book; basically use the spell description page as their reference guide. In that sense duplicate output wouldn't be useful unless the description would change between ranks or number of targets. Of course, as it turns out this isn't the case and my misunderstanding of the intended use for that output was confusing me!

Haha, yeah, it's old. I think we'll eventually move to pathfinder as a group, but for this game we simply had too many old source materials to justify buying anything new until we were certain we'd have the ability to meet regularly!

I would absolutely prefer to not use paper for a variety of reasons, but currently computers are banned at the table for some good reasons, haha.

Thanks for your help, everyone!
