Just started trying to make a spell casting class in the editor and I have a question on the use of panels:

I've used the "Create Panel" box to make a panel on the Class Helper, which is linked to the Class Levels - basically following the same steps as the tutorial. Do I need to put an entry in the Linked Panel ID box on the Class Helper, and if so, what should go here? If I don't put anything then creating a character with the class gives me a panel, but the special abilities list and spells per level (this is a wizard style caster) are missing - the base attack and saves are present and correct, as is the spellbook. If I do put the name of the panel here (as all the standard classes have one) I just get an error message. I was trying to use the file's name as I wasn't sure where to get a unique id for a panel.

(The class I'm trying to put in is the Savant from the Dragon Compendium, who gains arcane spells at level 5. This also gets divine spells eventually, which throws up another question - is it possible to create a class with both? I've only tried to enter the arcane magic so far. I'd understand if you weren't supporting this - this is the only class I've ever seen that supports both)

Thanks

I THINK, note THINK, that this is dues to the fact that the standard classes don't HAVE a separate file for the panel, in the way that the 'home-made' classes do. I've noted the same thing.

The 'Linked Panel Id' attribute is only used to flag the panel for
errors if you take the wrong number of spells. If you want to show the
special abilities list, you need to enter it into the "Special Ability
Info" field in the editor.

If you've generated a panel for your class, you can manually enter
"cUsrXXX" as the linked panel id, where XXX is your class abbreviation.
I'm working on a way to automate this, so you don't have to enter it
manually in the future.

Eek. He gets both arcane and divine spells? Do you mean that at level 5,
his spell list includes (for example):

Magic Missile
Burning Hands

And then at level 6 he gets:

Cure Light Wounds
Remove Poison

Or do you mean that at level 5 he can cast 1 level 1 Arcane spell, then
at level 6 he can also cast 1 level 1 Divine spell? Or is it something else?

Thanks,

Thanks for answering, but I don't seem to be able to resolve this.

It allows me to use that panel name, and I've entered into the Class Helper a special ability list and spells known list, but the panel for the class doesn't display the special ability list - it shows the full list of abilities entered as specials, but not the list in the top right of the panel. This is true when I run through the "Craftsman" tutorial as well.

I just can't get the panel to allow the class to have any spells memorized - it just lists "No Spells" under the Spellbook (which works fine). Any spells entered are in red (using the linked panel ID does remove an error message that otherwise occurs though). I'm pretty sure I entered the spells known properly, using 0.1 where only bonus spells apply and a linkage to put in the spell attribute as INT (I kept getting errors from the panel until I did that).

Just to explain the class, it's a bit of a mix of things, getting quite a few specials (including bonus feats), and a very limited selection of arcane spells (utility stuff, no magic missiles) from level 5 onwards (levels 1 to 4 spells). The class later gains divine spells from level 10 onwards in a similar way (as a separate spell progression). I don't think my character's going to reach that level in the class, so I'm not going to worry too much about putting the divine spells in - I've only tried to enter arcane spells so far. (The way I see it, it might be possible to do both by creating a separate class with the divine progression that allows continued arcane spell progression from the first class, as some prestige classes do).

As you speculated, it's 99.9% likely that this is the same problem being discussed in the "The Duskblade Problem" thread. We think we've found the problem and fixed it on our end, but we still need to test it further to be sure. Stay tuned for further updates in the alternate thread....

Okay, cool, the new version seems to have fixed this problem.

Thanks guys.
