Hardware Question about Multiple Cores

I've got to update my cpu and motherboard as it is getting long in the tooth. (AMD A4 3300).

So considering that the new Ryzen chips have cheaper multiple cores, my questions is does Realm Works take advantage of these cores?

I could go expensive and future proof with an 8 core chip or would a 4 or 6 core be enough? Also does the chipset make a huge difference?

I just got a Ryzen 5 1600. I was in the same situation, roughly that you are in. I'm not noticing a performance increase in RW from when I put the SSD in my old system. I'd guess that RW is far more drive and RAM bound than CPU bound in most cases. I'd aim for an SSD over 6 cores if your budget is tight.

As to chipset, I'd stick to the B350. Unless you think you'll need 2 graphics cards for some reasons, professional streamer or some such, the x370 is really overkill. I got the Asrock AB350 which is $89 and I'm quite happy with it.

The R5 chip/B350 does mean you have to get a graphics card as there is no integrated graphics on the board so keep that in mind.

I think it was said before that RW's speed won't increase with more cores, but having an SSD hard drive (I think this is what they're called) would make a difference.

Thanks for the info. RW is already on an SSD and I have a decent graphics card.
So now it's only a matter of future proofing and budget.

I'll tell you this, I couldn't be happier with the 1600 in other applications.

I'm primarily a software developer and my old system was a Haswell i5. Compile times have been cut by a significant amount.

In gaming I've gained quite a FPS boost across the board.

I haven't done a new video yet but we got a R7 1700 for the guy who does video in my shop and he can't stop raving about how much it has improved his workflow.

I agree with kbs666, unless you are doing video editing or require 2 graphics cards the X370 is overkill.
I also opted for the B350 by MSI.
I also got the MSI GTX 1080, since the 1080 ti dropped these prices down.
I went with the Ryzen 1700X since I'm a software developer, and also make use of SQL Server.

For storage I took advantage of the m.2, and got a 256Gb nvme
This is my primary storage so anything heavy in database will benefit from the performance increase.
My secondary storage is an SSD 500Gb
And finally a third Hybrid hard drive, a Seagate Firecuda 1TB

I came from the first generation i7 Bloomfield.

Heh. My desktop is an i7-2600K and it's trucking along fine. Throw in a newer video card than my GTX 570 and it'd probably be good for another few years.
