Am I right this is how you create a cohort for leadership?

So I'm just playing around with the program learning how to do things and I just wanted to check if I'm right the way you use leadership is to take the feat, make a new hero and level them up as per the cohort rules under that feat (adjusting for games). There is no automatic cohort generation like there is for a familiar or animal companion?
