I'm soooo very stoked that the inventory function "foundation" has
been laid in AB 3.0. What will it take to get it in working order? Is it doable from the devkit side of things? (For those not aware of it, the inventory feature will allow you to enter in all the available models in your collection, like say an exact squad and vehicle count of your Space Marine models. Then when you compose a roster or army list, it will tell you if you've gone over your available models and which you will need to buy. Makes for a great wish list, or reality check, depending on your pay check.) Thanks soooo much! ------------------------ Yahoo! Taken from our web site of AB3.0 features: "Foundation for Inventory Tracking – The new engine is designed to support inventory tracking of the models you own. Inventory tracking will NOT be implemented in V3.0, but the foundation is in place so that we can add it in a subsequent release." Inventory tracking won't be a 3.0 feature, but will be included in a future release. Basically, how it'll work is that the data file author will be able to mark an option as 'equipment' to note that it must be represented on the model. (For example, a lascannon would be 'equipment', a frag grenade wouldn't.) AB will then match your collection of models to what the roster requires. Full details of this have NOT been worked out yet, so I can't give you any more information than that. Inventory management is a lot more complex than it first appears because people have widely varying feelings about it. Andrew might have a gang of space marines armed with two bolt pistols and 'count them' as having bolters or bolt pistols / CC Weapons as necessary; Bobby might have every single unit done perfectly; Craig might have only unprimed orcs with no arms. Any inventory feature needs to support all these play styles. Hope this helps, -- Colen McAlister (colen@wolflair.com) Lone Wolf Development www.wolflair.com ------------------------ Yahoo! To actually get inventory management to work, it will require that we
release another update AFTER V3.0. We're building in the FOUNDATION to enable inventory support within AB3. Just like when you build the foundation for a house, you then need to build the house on top of it. So the engine has some key new stuff in place to provide a foundation for inventory management. But V3.0 will NOT include the actual "house". In other words, there will be NO inventory management in V3.0. Inventory management for the end-user will be added in a SUBSEQUENT release. With the foundation in place, authors will be able to design data files to identify appropriate inventory-related information for AB to use. And if the data file authors use the new inventory-related mechanisms, their data files will work with the new inventory functionality when it is added to AB. If they don't, then they will need to update the data files to support inventory management at that point in time. But we're working with the authors right now during Beta to do our best to have everything in place. Hope this clarifies, Rob At 09:02 AM 8/13/2004 +0000, you wrote: >I'm soooo very stoked that the inventory function "foundation" has >been laid in AB 3.0. Thanks for the info, Rob
Coupla quick questions, if I may. Would one be able to list painted and unpainted minis separately? i.e identify I've got 40 blunderbuss and 20 are painted? Would one be able to identify command figs (champ/muso/standard) in stock in a similar way? The plan is to handle the situations you list below.
I hope between Colen's post and the stuff you list below, it's becoming clear why inventory management is NOT a simple thing and why it's planned as a future addition after V3.0. We're putting the foundation in place now, but there's a LOT of work involved in ultimately adding all the functionality. :-) -Rob At 08:55 PM 8/14/2004 +1000, you wrote: >Coupla quick questions, if I may. >Would one be able to list painted and unpainted minis separately? i.e >identify I've got 40 blunderbuss and 20 are painted? So do we have any idea when 3.0 is going into testing?
Also I have to appologize for some of the confusion on the Dakka thread as I was offline for a week or so when the it wandered into panic mode (due to people reacting and not checking Lonewolf)...Oops... 8) ===== __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Beta testing started just over a week ago. At present, the Beta team
consists primarily of data file authors, with the goal being to get them up to speed with AB3 so that data file migration can start soon. Our target for release is a few months out. There is no concrete date set at this time. -Rob At 11:10 AM 8/16/2004 -0700, you wrote: >So do we have any idea when 3.0 is going into testing? > Also I have to appologize for some of the confusion >on the Dakka thread as I was offline for a week or so >when the it wandered into panic mode (due to people >reacting and not checking Lonewolf)...Oops... 8) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rob Bowes (rob@wolflair.com) (650) 588-8252 Lone Wolf Development www.wolflair.com ------------------------ Yahoo!
