We would like to add a feat to this system centered around animal companions. Specifically, when a druid or ranger takes this feat, their effective level for animal companion selection and bonuses is 4 levels higher. Would someone help explain to me how to program this feat into HL?

Looking through the srd_animalcompanions.dat file (in an XML editor) it looks like each of the Animal Companion races looks up
child[cAnimComp].field[CompLevel].value

to find whether they're a valid selection for that level.

I'd compare the hero's tags when they have a companion or not - I know there's a tag set when you click the "add arcane familiar" botton on a wizard/socerer's panel, so there'll be one to tell you whether or not you've selected an animal companion.

So, have your script make sure there is an animal companion, then modify that CompLevel field, and see if it's just there to control the availability of animal companions, or whether it also controls their HD, special abilities, etc.
