Alignment restrictions on Improved Familiars

One of my players made a warpriest of Ragathiel. He has taken the feats:
Familiar Bond
Improved Familiar Bond
Improved Familiar

He is now level 7 and is changing his familiar.
His alignment is neutral good, one step away from his deity.
Improved familiar says you can be one step away in alignment on each axis from your familiar, but my character can't get take an Azata, Lyrakien because the error says his alignment needs to match. A lot of other advanced familiars have the same error.

Is this a bug, or is this how it's supposed to work? If this is supposed to work the way the program is saying, why?

Bestiary 2 pg. 38: "A chaotic good 7th-level spellcaster can gain a lyrakien as a familiar if she has the Improved Familiar feat." So while most improved familiars only require one step away, the monster entries for several improved familiars (including the lyrakien) specify that that creature is more strict about what masters they'll work for - that they'll only accept full alignment matches.
