When I first started using the Downloader with Norton I had to set up an exception in the antivirus for it. The antivirus reported it as a threat and quarantined it. Found out the only reason it did that is because it didn't know what it was. And less than 5 Norton users had ever used it according to their database. It worked fine after I set up the exception for it.

After having some hard drive and other computer issues, I had to get a new drive and reinstall Herolab. I've also installed windows 8.

The problem is that when I run the downloader now to get the 4e data again, all I get is the DOS screen flashing up and then disappearing on me before I can enter a number. This happens now under windows xp and 7 emulation as well. Anybody else having this issue or know of a way around it.

I should also mention that it has been at least 8 months since I have used it as we have been playtesting another game.

Thanks for any help.

I don't have windows 8 so I can't say for certain.

but, when I run the downloader, I tend to open a dos prompt, change to the directory where the downloader is, and then run it.

If you're just double clicking it via explorer, it could be that it's throwing up an error but then just closing the command window.

Can you try it via the command prompt and see if you get a useful error message?

I've tried running both Hero Lab and the downloader in administration mode, and still all I get are a whole bunch of exclamation marks when it tries to download files. Anybody got any suggestions?

Sorry for the late reply but Christmas was crazy. I did try the dos prompt but exactly the same thing happened. It opens a window asking me if I want to allow changes to be made to the computer and then flashes a dos screen and closes. No error message that I can see.

Update: Thanks to a clue from Colen, the problem is fixed. In case anybody else has the issue, I'll post the quick solution.

It appears that the ddidownloader file has to be in the program data folder "Hero Lab\data\4e" folder (not the Downloader folder). For some reason the program data folder was hidden on my machine. I must have found it initially by searching and then dragged the exe file to the desktop rather than making a shortcut. Of course this messed everything up. Once I could move it back to the proper location and set up a shortcut, all was well with the world and I'm happily updating.

Thanks for your suggestions.

So, can somebody direct me to where the DDI Downloader should be on Win7? It's been a *long* time since I've looked for it... thanks!

EDIT: Never mind! Realized going through Hero Lab is the way to go!
