I don't think this is a reason just go around not using remainder links, unless anything else using them is broken. I like having the exact count of all weapons in a squad, particularly when I have quite a few lists with subtle weapons variations. It makes checking that I'm putting out the right type of model that much easier (I like to play WYSIWYG with at least weapons).
Besides, using remainders seems a whole lot simpler than that last thing you laid out  , and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
