I'm getting this list of errors. Can someone help? Also, is there a general way set of instructions to try to track down and fix errors of this nature? They seem fairly common for me whenever program updates are released?

I tried to load the portfolio file of the group of PCs that I DM. This portfolio file was working fine before I installed the program updates. See list of errors below. Many of them seem to be with things I created in my user file -- things like the Greyhawk Flan language, the god Obad-Hai, etc. Again, these things were working fine before I installed the program updates. Also, this kind of problem is common. I don't know why the program isn't stable. If I create a functional thing in the user file, I don't know why new updates screw things up. And once again the request of how I track down and fix these kinds of errors.

This is all very frustrating. It makes me want to chuck the whole program, in which I've invested a lot for multiple licenses and datasets. When the program it works, it works. But when I encounter these errors -- usually as I sit down to prep for a Sunday night gaming session -- it's very discouraging and trying to fix things, hunting through the forums eats up all my prep time. I hate it. Help!

(Finally, the first set of problems I kicked off this string with occur when I try to compile my user file in the editor. I should have said that earlier. Whereas the errors below occur when I load the portfolio file containing my PCs.)

Errors were encountered when loading the saved portfolio! A record of these errors can be found in the file "C:\Users\Jeffrey\AppData\Local\Temp\hero_lab_load _issues.log". If you notice incorrect behaviors in your portfolio, please report it to the data file authors (you can contact them from the Help menu).

If you are getting any errors on starting HeroLab, or after selecting a rules set to load, *that* will prevent any user files from loading (HeroLab goes into Safe Mode with no user files loaded). After that, any portfolio using content from user files will generate errors like those.

To start with, close HeroLab, then open it again, select your rules set, and watch for any error messages. If you get an error message, right-click on it and select Copy to Clipboard. Then you can post it here.

The errors I'm finding when I tried to compile changes to my user file are the first set of errors copied in from clipboard above. And the ones I'm getting when I load the relevant portfolio are listed in the second posting above. So I think I've already done what you're suggesting. The issue is -- OK there are two lists of errors. How do I fix them? And why does simply installing the latest updates to the program create these kinds of new problems all the time?

Finally, I don't understand your first sentence:

"If you are getting any errors on starting HeroLab, or after selecting a rules set to load, *that* will prevent any user files from loading (HeroLab goes into Safe Mode with no user files loaded)."

What does *that* mean? i don't follow the sentence immediately above at all.

When you load the Pathfinder game system you are getting an error. That is the error message we need to see. Right click and select "copy" and then past the error message here.

Once HL gets an error on load it goes into safe mode and won't load any .user files (ie addon's).

My "guess" is you have not upgraded to the latest version of the Community Bestiary and are getting a Duplicate Thing. Make sure you have updated to v2.18 of the CB.

ShadowChemosh, your guess was correct. I started with downloading and installing the Community Bestiary version in the Latest Updates. That eliminated all of the error messages. Thanks very much.

But then my question is -- nothing told me to update that. I thought that when updates are put out for those things then on the Select a Game screen it tells you that there are new updates are available. In other words, if that doesn't show the need for an update, how would I ever know I needed to download a new community bestiary version?

The only time I have seen that is when the CB is installed in a secondary game folder. So one can have more than one copy of "Pathfinder" game system. So default one is in a folder named "Pathfinder" but you can make others called like "PathfinderCB" or something. These secondary game systems don't always correctly tell you when an update is out.

Otherwise it is suppose to tell you when a new version is out. And from I have seen it does work 99% of time.... Sorry don't have a good answer here for why...

Weird. This is the folder wherein I find two community bestiary files:

C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\pathfinder

So I don't think I have a separate, different folder.

But the two files with community bestiary in the filenames look like duplicates. Could that be the problem as to why the need for updating wasn't showing up on the latest updates pop up?
