Runes as Gifts option?

How do I use Runes as Gifts per the sidebar on page 97 in the Game Mastery Guild?

Add the rune as normal and mark it as free.

I am not saying to give the rune away. I am asking about the Relics which have abilities called Gifts. There is an option to use runes as Gifts. Is this still done the same way?
