how are the files coming along?

Good. They're complete, thanks to the info you supplied. A few
cards are still missing flavor text and artist information, but I
went ahead and added them anyway (with "unknown" as the artist).
I'll post them soon -- I'm currently waiting on an answer from FFG
for permission to post.

you need to contact FFG and get the missing artist info. If you add it
later it will cause problems with inventory (orphaned records).

Ed, can you be of any assistance here?

If you don't get permission, you should still be able to upload it to
this group.

I hope you are kidding. I would be shocked if Card Vault caused inventory
problems if a data file had some missing artist info added later. I'd like
to get an official response to this.

I can see a truckload of potential problems if this is the case.

R.

As long as you do not change the Artist ID value, you can change the name all
you want. It is the ID code that is used by CV for inventory. That is there so
that if there is more than one piece of art associated with a particular card,
then each piece of art gets its own id, as well as the artist name. Only the id
matters.

I'm just reciting what's in the authoring docs, and what has been said here.

Well, unfortunately, you are mistaken on this Jim. :-( You (and Bob) are
apparently confusing two very distinct items. The Authoring Kit docs spell
out exactly FOUR things that must never change for cards. They are:

1. Unique id of the card
2. Unique id of the style and the styles assigned to the card
(deleting/changing will result in orphaned records, although adding new
styles to a card is perfectly acceptable)
3. Set of languages assigned to the card (same issues apply as for styles)
4. Unique ARTWORK id assigned (changing this is tantamount to changing the
unique id of the card)

This last one is obviously where the confusion centers. There is an
absolute distinction between artWORK and artIST. You CANNOT change the
ARTWORK id, but the artist is irrelevant to CV. The artist is used just
like any other tag, being freely added, changed, or deleted by the author.

When you create data files, the ARTWORK id must never change. But you can
freely omit all artists and add them at a later date without ANY impact on
CV's operation.

The bottom line is that NO missing ARTIST info is needed from FFG before
releasing the files. The key thing to get correct is which cards were
printed and whether any cards were printed with multiple pieces of
different artwork. Also be sure to get the foil/non-foil and language
information correct, erring on the side of omitting values that you are
uncertain of. It's easy to add them if you discover they are missing, but
orphans result if you remove them.

Now I *HAVE* to get back to working on CV. I'm pushing to get V1.2 into
initial Beta testing tomorrow - before I leave for a local Con for the
weekend on Friday.

Thanks, Rob

Darn. I knew I should have checked the docs.

I knew it was the ID of the art, but I called it the wrong thing.

From a complexity standpoint, writing the rules & stats represents a major
learning curve. However, from a time standpoint, getting all the card data
into place is the bigger issue. So.....

Once you've put together data files with all the cards for a game, please
let us know. We can likely help out with writing the rules/stats to
facilitate completing the data files. There may be some additional tags
you'll need to add to various cards to enable all the rules to be written,
but we'll be able to do a lot of stuff that requires the steep learning
curve for you.

FYI: As part of V1.2, we'll be releasing a CVEdit tool that allows manual
editing/entry of cards. This will make it possible to generate data files
without having to write conversion programs and without having to edit XML
files manually. Colen's working hard on this right now, and it's coming
along nicely.

Thanks, Rob
