So I see a thread entitled "Sorry for your Loss Rob" and then, without knowing any details, the first thing I read is this.

So I am sorry for your loss, Rob, but after making a pretty serious misconception of what "4 footed" could mean, I'm really really glad it was just a CAT.

My brother had to euthanize his dog. His name was Marshall. He was playful, mischevious, funny and protective (not visciously). He wasn't even my dog, and I miss him. When I go to visit, the house is just emptier. He was always Marshall, never "just a dog."

I know you didn't mean any harm in what you said, so please take this as a gentle observation that a companion of 20 years is not "just a cat."

Oh, I know. It's a context thing. They're not just animals in the context of the loss we feel, the value they had in our lives, even in their contribution. A lot of times they can have been more important than some of the ancillary humans we've known over the years.

But when you're reading a forum post and come to the idea that four-footed is referencing the height of a child, and then learn otherwise, in that moment, to you, it's "just an animal" by comparison.
