Where can I find the option for adding hit dice to monsters? It used to be on the top of the list under the add levels, hit dice, or templates screen but now when I click there it's not there.
Example: I want to create an advanced Nightmare (10 HD). I select Nightmare from the Choose Race list, then I click back to the Classes tab and hit the Click here to add class levels or hit dice section. I'm redirected to the above mentioned screen but the option to add hit dice (or change size) is no longer there. Where did it go? |

I just tried this, and it looks like the options are not there if the monster is configured as a Hero, but are there if it is configured as an NPC.

Press "CTRL-K" and check mark "House Rules->Allow PCs to add Bonus HD".

Okay, I got that fixed but now it seems to be adding the extra hit points twice. Once as additional hit dice and again as base hit points.

I just had a similar bug occur where i was unable to add hit dice to monsters or PCs at all (the option from the levelup/hitdice area was completely absent). I tried the houserule fix, and it did not fix the problem, however restarting hero lab worked.
In fact, after restarting I am now unable to replicate the problem. |

regarding your HP amount problem, the HP average/max rules seem to be the culprit:
way to replicate the bug: import a nightmare from encounter builder, modify the HP rules to average/max, then start adding additional HD. Your creature gets the new HP in the new level, and then the original HD is modified to include the additional same amount as well. You can avoid the bug by not automating it, and entering the average/max manually, but i'd definitely call that a bug. |
