Anyone that's use HL for iPad knows that it's a bit of a RAM hog (snort, snort) and that kicking all of the other apps out of RAM helps SIGNIFICANTLY with app performance, crashes, updates and so forth. Found this in a Gizmodo article and found it to be useful. So I thought I'd pass it along.

To quickly clear iOS RAM press and hold the Power button as normal until the familiar “slide to power off” option appears. Don’t accept the invitation and don’t cancel either: Instead, press and hold the Home button. After a few seconds you should find yourself back on the home screen with a fresh slate as far as RAM goes.

So far it's worked very, very well for my group.

Have a nice one,

Kizan

What you're describing is the "force power off" mechanism on iPads. There's no difference between doing that and a "normal" power cycle, so if you're doing it, just turn it off normally - don't hard reset it.

FYI, we're testing an update right now that drastically reduces Hero Lab's RAM usage, so watch for that soon.

I've used this method. It is not a hard power off or a normal power cycle. The device remains on but all the application RAM is flushed. Forced power off would be holding both home and power buttons at the same time to force the device into power off.

Glad to hear about the update.

What you are doing is like jump starting an engine, it can, if done to often, damage app files and make a restore of the device become necessary. This type of damage can be captured in the backup files so the restore must be done without using any backup.

Be careful with any of these button based resets. They all have a down side as well.

Why this may work the best we have found is simply to force close all other cached apps running before starting HL. Then run with like only one other app (ie safari). That helps make sure nothing else is using the memory.

You can force close apps very easily but going to the switch app view and simply swiping up.
