A rough idea before I forget:
Add some additional encounter types, and use that field to auto-select the pin type. Revealed pins with unrevealed content would use a "generic" pin, so the players know something is there - perhaps because they've heard rumors about a location or have been given a specific mission someplace. The pin seen by the GM (and by the players after the associated content has been revealed), would by default use an image determined by the encounter type (or similar field for non-encounter locations - I haven't been entering any data in those areas yet to know what the options might be). The additional encounter types come in for the use of hybrid pins. Below is a quick list of possible additions. As you can see, a default combat or trap icon could be reused as part of many different pins, so that when looking at the map the GM can easily see what types of encounters will be coming up, allowing a bit of foreknowledge to help switch into the correct mindset needed when the encounter occurs.
