I am trying to make a custom rule set starting with Savage Worlds as a base. I have copied that directory and now trying to modify the .dat files according to my needs. All changes I make, however, does not seem to be reflected when I launch herolabs and pick the new rule set.
example: i want to remove all the current weapon types and add my own types. Right now, savage worlds has things like "modern pistol", "modern rifle", etc. I would like my rule set to instead have "1-H energy", "2-H energy", etc. Do I need to compile the files or something? Thanks Greg |

First of all, I need to understand whether the new "rule set" you're creating is based on the Savage Worlds system or a completely different game system. If the latter, you should use a different approach when starting out, since copying the Savage Worlds data files will retain lots of extra baggage that you will have to delete. By going to the Develop menu and selecting the Create New Game System option, you'll start with a suitable framework upon which you can build your own data files.
I'll assume you want to adapt the Savage Worlds files for a new setting. To replace all the existing weapons with new ones, you first need to delete all the existing weapons. The weapons will be found in the file "thing_armory.dat". You'll need to open this file in a text editor and delete all the weapons you don't want appearing, then save the updated file. Once that's done, reload all the data files so they are recompiled. You can now add the new weapons that you want. This can be done either by directly editing the data files or using the Editor. Hope this helps... |
