I got a special familiar from my DM when I took the improved familiar feat, but I can't figure out how to change what familiar I have.

When I delete my familiar I get the "Click the companion button to add an Arcane Familiar" button to show, but when I click to add it, it automatically brings back the same familiar I just deleted.

Is there any way to change this? I have the herolab file for the familiar drawn up as an NPC, but I can't figure out how to set it as a familiar.

Thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by a "special familiar", is it one of the options that is normally available as an improved familiar (for example, a psuedodragon)? In that case, add the arcane familiar, then transition to that hero and on the Background tab click on the old race and switch it to the new.

If it is not something which is already available as an improved familiar (like, i dunno, a miniature giant space hamster), then you'd need to build it in the editor.

When you go to the familiars Minion Tab can you not click on the Race and change it?

miniature giant space hamsters are far more than just an 'improved familiar'. They are animal companions - and amazing ones at that.
