It's been three months since we first announced Tournament Ace, and some of you are no doubt waiting for an update on the project. As we head into GenCon, now is an ideal time for us to shed some light on what's been happening and where Tournament Ace is headed.

We had originally planned to begin Beta testing of Tournament Ace in May, a couple of months after we publicly announced the product. As that time drew closer, we spent a while evaluating the project in depth, as we do with all our new products. How good is the user experience? How solid is the design and the code? Are there any issues that will lead to problems for users, or us, down the line?

As we asked ourselves those questions, it became clear that Tournament Ace required further work to reach the level of sophistication and quality we wanted. Beta testing is ideal for getting a product into users' hands to uncover what was overlooked in development. In this case, we identified a number of issues ourselves that needed to be addressed, so a Beta release was premature until those were first resolved.

Once we began re-working elements of Tournament Ace to correct these issues, we decided to also re-visit some of the original limitations that had been initially accepted for the V1.0 release. We concluded that, given the revisions we were already making, it would be easier to resolve those limitations now than address them in a V2.0 release. Essentially, we're overhauling Tournament Ace to greatly enhance what can be done in the initial release and make it significantly easier for us to introduce many new capabilities that we have planned. In many ways, we're skipping V1.0 and going straight to V1.5.

As a result of all the changes, our revised plan is to enter Beta testing in late 2010. This puts us roughly six months behind where we had hoped to be. We understand that some users may be disappointed by the delays, but our overriding goal is to release an excellent product. By making these adjustments now, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure we achieve that goal, and we expect that everyone will be very happy with the end result.

For everyone who has submitted a request to help with the Beta testing of Tournament Ace, we still have your emails and will strive to include everyone in the process. However, the number of requests we received was huge. Given the interest level, we'll probably administer the Beta in two phases, first with a smaller group and then with a much larger group. So please stay tuned for an email from us when we finally enter Beta testing later this year.

At GenCon this coming week, we'll be demonstrating what has effectively now become the original prototype. We'll also be outlining everything Tournament Ace will offer when it launches in early 2011. Please stop by the seminar at 2pm Saturday and you can take a peek at the tool for yourself.
