Similarly, I have characters who aren't immediate ancestors/descendents such as grandparents and nephews. I'm not sure if I should just add my own relationship definitions or wait to see what comes down the development pike.

If you ultimately want to produce a proper "family tree" diagram in the future, you'll need to setup all the parent/child (ancestor/offspring) relationships. However, let's say you simply want to model siblings so you can view "all the siblings of Fred". Or maybe "all the close relatives of Jim". In that case, you should use a "Simple Connection" relationship. You can then specify a sub-type of "Personal" or "Family" (the latter of which we apparently forgot to add).

A "sibling" relationship would be good.

One thing that would be helpful in my campaign is a "Bastard Child of" category. I have a King with three bastard children by two different wives. All three are unacknowledged (though in high positions in the government of the kingdom).
