When I build characters in Herolab 5e the Languages and Proficiencies and the Ability Score Improvements sections dominate the class tab and I can only see one of the class's special abilities at a time. Is there any way to change this? It seems like a poor use of the space.

Are you running Hero Lab in a relatively small window? If you make the window bigger, it'll use the additional space to show more of the class's special abilities.

Unfortunately, there's no space to make the window bigger at 1366x768* with the default 40px bottom taskbar. Also, that subsection doesn't enforce a minimum of 2 visible entries like the "Ability Score Improvements" and "Languages and Proficiencies" subsections do.

With a quick test character I was able to get a second entry by getting the taskbar out of the way. On widescreen monitors I've been putting it on the left for years.

* Still generally the most common resolution from the stats I've seen, though I don't know if that's true for Hero Lab for Windows users specifically.
