after purchasing the pathfinder base pack last night, i am unable to add a familiar other than a mongoose to my wizard/sorc. can anyone tell em what i am doing wrong?

I don't have enough info to know for sure, but I'm going to take a guess at what you're doing wrong.

On your Wizard/Sorcerer tab, after you add the familiar, click on the Target symbol for it. That should switch you from editing your wizard/sorcerer to editing your familiar. Also, it should put you on the Minion tab for your familiar, but if it doesn't, then click the Minion tab.

Now you should be able to choose the race of your familiar, and you should be able to choose something other than mongoose.

As EightBitz says its really hard to "guess" from so little info. Best way would be to post your .por file.

My "guess" is you didn't turn on "Bestiary Familiars" option. Open your character and press "CTRL-K" and scroll down and make sure "Bestiary Familiars" is checked marked.
