This must be possible, but I'm tearing what little hair I have left out. I just want a unit to not appear in the main selectable list, but otherwise still count as a normal unit.

Do you mean that you don't want to be able to select it via available units, but when it is added (through an option I assume, by another unit) that you want it to count as a category? Sort of a Lord character taking a montrous mount that counts as a Rare unit or something similar?

If the above is the case you might want to have a postlink in that non-visible unit which is:
if (tagis.[runtme.child] = 1) then
var retval as number
retval = entity.assign[Group.Rare]
endif

or I imagine that you could make an extension which is "runtime.child" and then have the group added.

Just some ideas to think about, not quite sure if they'll work as above, but might give you some other ideas to think about.
