Before I ask, I should say the following:
Yes, I read the FAQ. No I don't have pop-up blocking software... So why won't my AB autoupdate connect to the update servers? At this point my computer is wide open for a a number of security risks and I don't know what the problem could be. |

However, there are lots of things that block internet access nowadays. Most security tools provide internet security, so they could be blocking AB. The built-in Windows Firewall with XP could be the problem. There are all sorts of possibilities. Unfortunately, since I can't look at your computer myself, I have no way to diagnosing this remotely. If AB is not able to access the internet, it is virtually a certainty that the problem is due to something blocking its access. AB uses the standard Windows API for internet access, so it will be readily blocked by any tools that provides internet security. -Rob -- Rob Bowes - rob@wolflair.com |

Here's what I have done:
Opened up all my router ports #1-the maximum port Triple Checked everything router related (I run my own ventrilo server off my laptop so if it can accept connections there the computer is wide open) Looked up three different pop-up blocker detecting sites to see if I had any I didn't know of. All three came back negative Turned off windows firewall Added Army Builders .exe to the exception list, just in case Checked to see if I had any 3rd party security software installed, i do not Added all four update sites to IE's "trusted site" list Added all four update sites to Mozilla's equivalent to the "trusted site list" Pinged www.wolflair.com from the command line. IP 209.59.187.112 came back with ~110ms latency and no lost packets Did the same for www.lonewolfdevel.com and www.datafilesrus.com and got the same results (IP's omitted) I reinstalled Army Builder It's clear my computer can send and recieve data from three of the four server ip's and I think my check to remove any pop-up blocking has been pretty thorough. The whole program is back to it's default state. btw, I had army builder 2.x up until I bought this and it connected to the internet just fine prior to the upgrade. Edit: After playing with my computer for better part of the evening, it seems like AB just plain isn't detecting my wireless card. My router doesn't record any events when I try to connect. It's possible that something is still blocking it but I have no way of detecting it. I need some solutions, and if there isn't anything you can do for me, how can I go about returning the product for a refund? |

If you think your wireless card might be the problem, you could try to install an other (wired) card. Probably some good friend is willing to lend his/her.
Dunno if it helps, but it might get you closer to whats actually the problem. |

I tried it with a wired card this morning and nothing happened.
Since IE is responsible for the Web part of the API, which settings should I make sure are on or off explicitly? |

Please forgive the terseness of this post, but we're at a tradeshow and I'm starting to post this reply at 5:15am. I have not gotten to bed yet. :-(
Many tools block access to the internet based on the client application. Most of those tools automatically allow IE to get through, and basic access via the command line (e.g. ping) will also often bypass the security tools. So your tests were exactly what I would have tried if I was in your position, but they unfortunately aren't conclusive in any way. :-( I'm NOT an IT/communications expert. So I'm not sure what to suggest at this point. I would love it if others could offer their suggestions, since I know there are a few IT experts on these forums. In the meantime, you should be able to get AB operational without internet access from within the product. Please use the "manual" method for license activation. You can initiate the process via the second option on the License menu. This approach will use your web browser to actually contact our licensing server. Since IE can get through fine, you should be able to get running this way. For data files, you can retrieve data files via our website. If you go to the Help menu within AB, there is an option to check updates on our website. This will take you to the section of our website within IE. You can then download the data files you want. After they are downloaded, you can then go to the Tools menu and select Import Files. You'll find more details on this process in the User Manual. The above should at least get you limping along while we try to figure out what the real source of the problem is. |

Hope the show goes well. > Many tools block access to the internet based on the client application. I am not a Windows expert, but hopefully I can get the conversation started. 1) What version of Windows are you running? 2) Do you know if there is a firewall installed on your system? a) If so, what company makes it? b) If you are not sure, are you running anything called an "Internet Security Suite" such as those made by McAfee, Norton, Kaspersky? 3) Are you doing this inside a company? a) If so, there may be a firewall you are not aware of that is blocking AB. b) If not, then do you know if you are using a cable/dsl router or is the machine hooked up directly to the Internet? That should get the ball rolling. __________________________________________________ __________________________________ Be a PS3 game guru.
