Class Companion

Is there a source that walks you through all steps neccessary to create a new companion type and then adding it to a character via a class ability?

I am trying to create a class based around a rebalanced version of the leadership feat. I found Tabs for the new type and the helper but I can't find the methods used for adding the actual character.
