Setting up so many layers would be pain to perform. I would prefer having a second transparent layer on which I can use the reveal mask. So this second layer would contain all the GM info (like secret doors and traps, and hidden rooms) which starts hidden, and allows you to reveal those parts of the second layer. (Unrevealed parts of this second layer would be completely transparent - both foreground and background.)

I agree completely. That's why I originally suggested pin like functionality but I stead of pins the ability to pick from a library of icons. The code therefore takes on the role of organising the layers. Add the ability to add custom sprites and you create a very powerful feature.
