Is it at all possible to export my MTGO database to a CSV and import
it into Card Vault? I just got the program, and it sure looks great, but the idea of entering all my cards seems rather daunting. I have all my physical cards entered into MTGO, I really hope I can just bring them over. Any ideas? ------------------------ Yahoo! Well, if you're the sort of collector that I am, I limit myself to certain
quantities (i.e., two full play sets). This makes the Batch Edit feature very useful; I select all commons and uncommons and enter 8 owned for all of them. This takes a lot of the trouble out of the entry. As for database import, I'll let Rob or Colen answer. ------------------------ Yahoo! I have not looked at MTGO recently. When I last looked at it (late last
year), there was no apparent mechanism for exporting your inventory information at all. It was a closed system that kept users locked in by preventing them from getting their data back out. In addition, the MTGO system uses digital signatures for all cards, so the model utilized is substantively different from the traditional format used in the physical world of cards and that is modeled within Card Vault. The goal with most subscription-based online systems is to get the consumer to invest time into the product and then provide no way to extract that data and move it elsewhere. This essentially locks the user into the product, which compels them to keep paying the subscription fee, even if a better alternative shows up. My assessment was that MTGO adopted this model. In contrast, Card Vault's formats are completely open. We're establishing the product as a standard through its ability to integrate smoothly with other solutions and tools, as well as by providing unparalleled functionality. It a better solution comes along, it will be relatively easy to move your data to the other tool, which keeps us motivated to continue evolving Card Vault. :-) Unless MTGO has changed recently, if you don't want to stay locked into MTGO, then you'll probably need to re-invest the time to enter your inventory again. :-( However, Card Vault's batch editing functionality provides the means to get the bulk of your collection entered in very short order. We've had multiple reports of users with collections of 5,000 cards getting them fully entered into CV within a matter of a couple hours. That's not a huge investment, given that you gain a great deal of power and flexibility through CV. :-) Hope this helps, Rob At 05:26 AM 4/19/2003 +0000, you wrote: >Is it at all possible to export my MTGO database to a CSV and import >it into Card Vault? > >I just got the program, and it sure looks great, but the idea of >entering all my cards seems rather daunting. Since no one has responded to this yet I thought I would. I don't
want to debate the merits of how WOTC is handling the digital objects and their policy for redemtion, I just want to state fact about some functioanlity within the product. If you go into your collection and select spreadsheet view. You can then right-click any row and select "Select All." This will highlight your entire collection. From there you can right-click again and select "Export as CSV." And this will export your entire collection to a CSV file onto your computer. The file has the following data fields: Cardname Qty owned Online Qty id for trade Qty you have physically as recorded in MTGO Rarity Set No. within set If you have the foil version of a card the word "Premium" is in parathensis at the end of the card name. With this information is hand, is there an easy mechanism to import this data into CV? This export functionality either wasn't present in the earlier versions of
MTGO or I completely missed it. Thanks for pointing this out!! If MTGO exports the inventory as a CSV file, then it should be relatively easy to convert it to the XML format needed by Card Vault. We'll make a point of generating a converter in the near future. Unfortunately, there is no converter currently available - I didn't know MTGO output the data until now! If you want to do it yourself in the meantime, the Card Vault format is outlined the "Card Vault Interchange Formats" document included with the Authoring Kit. Thanks for pointing out this functionality within MTGO. We'll get something together shortly. -Rob At 12:50 PM 4/23/2003 +0000, you wrote: >Since no one has responded to this yet I thought I would.
