For AB, we use a commercial compression library. It uses an adapted version of the LZW algorithm. The import files themselves are files produced by this compression library, and since they are non-standard, they can't be accessed directly via other tools.
This is something we've had on the todo list to revise for many years, but it all works, so it's never actually been addressed.
