You may well be right that more "hardcore gamers" are on Android than iOS, but those hardcore gamers still make up a minority of our customers. iOS has a number of advantages over android (less fragmentation, harder to pirate software, etc) that make it a better candidate for our initial tablet implementations.
A lot of the code we're writing will be reusable for the android platform as well, so once we're done with the iPad port, there won't be nearly as much work to do to move to a new tablet platform (as long as it supports C++, which I believe Android and windows 8 tablets both do).
