AB can do some strange things sometimes when it cannot access the internet to check for updates. As a start it may be worthwhile checking your firewall or AV is not blocking AB from getting internet access. Also try disabling checking for downloads at start up to see if that makes a difference. I am running AB under vista with no problems at all - other things that may be worth checking are the permissions you are running AB under too
