For any Americans playing at home. 3x specialist appointments so far. That put me about $300 out of pocket ($180ish per appointment with $70ish paid back by the governments Medi-Care system). There's been some tests and stuff but that had no cost. So that started on Saturday and the surgery will happen the following Thursday (tomorrow). So it's all very quick and going through the public hospital system there was next to no wait (Wednesday would have been soonest and that almost happened) and no out of pocket cost.

From what I understand of America that is not how this would pan out for you guys.

We opted not to use Private Health cover since it's only day surgery so really no point doing all that paper work.
Everything depends on your health insurance here. For instance when I went into kidney failure I was working for a company that had very good health insurance, Blue Cross/Blue Shield for anyone in the US, and it was amazing until I went on Medicare which is public insurance for the very sick and retired, turns out that Nixon of all people changed the law so that people in kidney failure who need dialysis are covered by Medicare which is pretty much a life saver since each treatment costs thousands of dollars and the copays on private insurance would have bankrupted me.
