I found the manuals quite useful at the time. I think putting it on in a wiki would have been a good alternative, but I think LWD was reluctant to do so, because nobody volunteer directly on the train to "keep it updated".
For general looks and ideas they are still very good. If you look to resolve a particular problem I would do what ruhar suggested
