We don't have a hard limit as it is dependent on many factors. We warn if you try to bring in an image with greater than around 12.5 million pixels (this corresponds to a 4K x 3K image). Pretty much any program will have the uncompressed images in memory as it is very hard to do any manipulation or to draw on screen using the compressed bits.
