The screenshots you show are right. As a Human you get 1 free Edge and in that screen you took only 1 Edge as a Reward, by taking 1 more Edge you are, in fact, overspent by 1 Edge. Ah...I guess the bug is in my head, not the tool. For some reason I was thinking everyone gets an Edge to start...and then Humans get an extra (free) Edge. Back to the drawing board for me...thank you for your patience!
