iPad Error Messages for Two Data Packages

lortondm

Well-known member
I find that two data packages create error messages that prevent me from loading my portfolios until I uninstall those packages (then things return to being fine):

(1) the Shadowsfall - Temple of Orcus package that shows up as an option automatically when you install the iPad app; and (2) the d20pfsrd Community Bestiary (and no, I didn't also install the Community Player Pack -- I'd seen the note saying they create duplicates).

The Errors Encountered for the Temple of Orcus are maybe 20 or 30 things that say, e.g., line 7 Thing -- Duplicate record encounter ('rUKobold'), etc.

The Errors Encountered for the Community Bestiary are only three and say:

File: PFRPG_Adjustments_1st (line 17) - Tag Group - Duplicate record encountered ('AdjustBon')

File: PRRPG_Adjustments_1st (line 34) - Tag Group - Duplicate record encountered ('Adjust AC')

File: PFRPG_SGG_Sources_1st (line 4) - Source - Duplicate record encountered ('pSGG')

Are these known bugs? Is there a fix? Can Lone Wolf work on a fix, etc.? I now can get my own exported user file to work fine. And the other community files like for Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and Dark Sun work and generate no errors. It's just the Orcus and Bestiary things that bomb out.

Thanks.

I have tested against "the Shadowsfall - Temple of Orcus package" and just did it again actually right now and CB and Shadowsfall both will load in the same game system.

You mention that you have your own stuff which means you have been in the .user files. Did you rename any of the Community Files? As the file name "PFRPG_SGG_Sources_1st" is not correct and not what is in our files. It is PFRPG_SGG_Source.1st so if you have two versions of this file then yes it will cause issues.

Can you list all the .user files or addons you have installed? I am trying to figure out how I have seen several people run into this duplicate "pSGG" source issue. That source is in a file called PFRPG_SGG_Source.1st and its named the same in EVERY community file. So that even if two different packages install the file it just overwrites and you end up with a single version of the file.

Do you get this when loading on the Desktop software or only the iPad? The issue is diagnosing the iPad is near impossible actually as you have no access to the files. So its only going to possible to figure this out on your desktop.

Sigh... So took some playing around to find the issue on my iPad. I don't know if the iPad is meant to be different or if this is a bug.

The issue is currently on the IPad you must have the CB, SGG, and my adjustments file loaded to get the above. This is only on the iPad on the desktop these three files all play nice.

For now you can uninstall the adjustment file as that is in the CB but you will need to decide between the CB and SGG data sets. They both wont work on the iPad but they will on the desktop software.

I will contact LW to see what is going on.

Can I ask a slighty off topic question? Why would you want to load the CB on the iPad? I mean you can't get to the stock files. You can't run an encounter and you can't make new monsters. Seems sort of pointless actually as the iPad is really meant for players and the CB is for DMs.

Wouldn't it be better to load the Player Pack, Adjustments, and then the SGG data sets instead? I just tested and those three will work together on the iPad and give you all the stuff a player would want.

Thanks ShadowChemosh. Right, I don't have this issue on my desktop. All the files work fine there, it seems, and don't conflict with one another. I also don't think this is a problem caused by my user file. Seems like you found the conflict or at least part of them.

The answer to your last question is that I was guessing that portfolios created using CB options become unusable on the iPad. So I have a gold dwarf gladiator I whipped up as a test. And when I call him up, it says -- "One or more required sources are not accessible for hero 'Testing Gladiator'. Subsequent errors may be the result of this problem. Then there are maybe 20 errors that follow. Here are the first three:

(1) Critical information not found in data files: Source: 'CB -- Forgotten Foes'

(2) Critical information not found in data files: Source: 'Variant Dragons'

(3) Critical information not found in data files: Source 'CB Jade Dragons & Hungry Ghosts.

Most of the errors seem to be preceded by Source 'CB ...." So I assumed I'd need that to install on the iPad not to get error messages. But maybe that wasn't the right assumption. Please read on ....

(A) (Without the Temple of Orcus) I can now get CB to run (as you found in your own experiments) -- As you suggested, I took out your adjustments and also SGG. But now I get different error messages when I load the Testing Gladiator. Here are the first three:

(1) Critical information not found **** Source 'Death Mage Feats (4)'

(2) **** Source 'Undead Feats (7)'

(3) **** Source 'Death Mage'

(**** = ellipses)

(B) I find that using the configuration I used in (A) above -- i.e., all packages installed except your adjustments and SGG, but with CB installed, I still can't install the Temple of Orcus. (In fact, I don't believe in any configuration I've ever been able to load Temple of Orcus.)

I'd like to be able to install all the packages on the iPad that work on the desktop because if not, then I can't be assured that something I create on the desktop will work on the iPad. So, for instance, I created the Testing Gladiator with a wartrident. But even in configurations where I can get the Testing Gladiator to work, he never has the wartrident. (I think the wartrident comes from the Temple of Orcus package, which as I've noted I can't get to ever work.) I'm a DM, but that would be a problem even for a player because it means I can't give a player an option from one of the packages causing conflicts (or that somehow fails to carry over) and expect it to work for that player in the iPad app.

Also, I'd like to be able to use the iPad app at the gaming table as a DM. The touchscreen feature and ease of switching make it a lot more attractive than futzing with a laptop during a game session. So I could call up, say, a group of orcs, and can easily track their missile weapon usage, what conditions they have, etc. The iPad is also mobile. I can get up from behind my screen with it in my hands. Laptops aren't mobile in the same way. You can hold it in one hand, but you can't type except by one-hand hunting and pecking or mousing, and, alternatively, needing to return to behind the screen to mouse around on the desktop/laptop app makes using that app to run combats inconvenient. I don't think it's worth it. It slows down play too much.

So hoping that the powers that be at Lone Wolf can figure a way for everything that works on the desktop to also work on the iPad.

For now I guess that as long as I make sure I create portfolios on the desktop that don't use data sources from: (a) Temple of Orcus and (b) SGG, then I'm OK. (Or I suppose I could swap out (b) for CB. But CB seems to have more data in it -- judging from iPad download time. So there are more additional options in there, I'm guessing.) -- then I'm OK. But obviously longer term, would like it if anything I could make work on the desktop carried over seamlessly to the iPad app without creating conflicts or missing carry overs, like the missing wartrident.

Thanks again.
