I'm pretty sure Burning Edge is in the RAW, this isn't an obscure rule. Any character with an edge rating can burn a point of their edge to Smackdown or survive (I forget its name).

I'm confused. Burning Edge permanently lowers your edge by one point, so why cannot the builder do this?

We had the same problem come up last week when we accidentally shot a flare at a gas main...
