Army Builder in WINE
 

I'm having a problem getting Army Builder to work in WINE. I appears
to choke trying to use the CD-ROM registration. If I didn't have to
use this method of confirming that I've bought the program it would
probably work fine.

Is there an alternative registration method?

Has anyone else had the same problem and resolved it somehow?

NOTE: I've gotten practially all of my other Windows programs to work
under WINE, and I have the /mnt/cdrom mapped to D: in the
configuration file for WINE, so the stupid simple solutions I've taken
care of.

Army Builder in WINE
 

The CD works as a keydisc, so all AB is doing is reading specific contents
of the CD. If your CD-ROM drive is working correctly, then AB should be
able to obtain this information properly.

My guess is that AB doesn't know to LOOK for the CD, since WINE probably
doesn't have the autorun mechanism of Windows. Either that or you may also
have an old (V1.x) CD that you are working with. Or you may have changed
the drive letter designation since installing AB and it's looking at the
wrong drive.

To get AB to look for the CD in the correct place, insert the CD and run
the program "launcher.exe". This should trigger an update of the Registry
that will cause AB to start checking for the CD henceforth. If you have a
V1.x CD (the V2.x CDs have red on the CD while the older ones don't), then
you'll have to physically install the product from the CD and THEN install
the latest version OVER that.

This should get AB to start looking for the CD, in which case it should
find it. Let me know if this doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks, I do have the 1.2 Army builder CD. Is there a discount rate for upgrading to a 2.x CD? I'll try the launcher.exe trick when I get home and see if that fixes it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm using the armybuilder directory that's on my Windows partition, and I do have that installed correctly there, and the CD-ROM is set up correctly on the WINE install.

In what way does launcher.exe change the registry the first time that Army Builder runs? Just in case I have to do this manually myself.

Do you mean that you didn't install Army Builder from within WINE? If not,
then you should perhaps try that; Army Builder sets up some settings in the
registry that it needs to run. If those aren't present (I don't know how
WINE works with respect to the registry, so I don't know if what you've
done is in fact entirely acceptable) it will very likely have problems.

You said you have the "1.2" CD. Well, there never WERE any V1.2 CDs, since
the first release on CD was V1.3. So I don't know whether you have a V1.x
or V2.x CD at this point. If you have V1.x, you MUST fully install AB from
the CD and then install the latest version OVER it as an update. With V2.x,
the launcher.exe program is all you need to run.

I tried just about everydamnthing. Including that. No luck.

Strangely, the install program works fine. It's just AB itself that chokes. It'd be interesting to download the CardVault demo and see what that does.

Oh, I see.

Well I do have the 1.3 CD, and I did install first 1.3 from the CD and then 2.0 from the download. And I did so within Linux using WINE, and it does not work. The one thing that I did not try was running 1.3 without the upgrade to 2.0 installed to see if that works.

Someone should write a FAQ/manual for this, because the Linux question seems to come up. Considering as how I'm a decent writer and a Linux ignoramus I'm wondering if it shouldn't be me.

Does Lone Wolf have any objections to me doing this?
