WH: 8th Ed

With GW on the horizon for releasing 8th edition WHFB in July, apparently there will be army erratas to conform to the new 8th edition ruleset.

I'll be happy to proofread any fixes here for Army Bulder for Warriors of Chaos (my main army) and any others I happen to have.

How will the update for 8th edition occur? Will the previous main files become obsoleted? Since the main structure of the game, at least according to rumors, will change quite a bit, I expect this to be the case.

robert May 10th, 2010 03:55 PM

from what i read 8e will be a p big change... so i will probably start a new set of data files based on the 7e ones but spearate. anyone know when it is out? :~)

Yobtar May 10th, 2010 05:14 PM

GreenTea June 15th, 2010 10:20 PM

Pre-orders went on-line yesterday at 10:00am BST (and promptly broke the server :p ) and you should be able to get access to a preview copy at your local GW store by the end of the week, just in case you wanted to start compiling lists of things early. ;)

Anyway, most of the changes are unrelated to stat-lines from what I can tell, so you'll mostly want to look at the updated "college" lores of magic and the new list of common magic items.

Other things of note; hand weapons with shields now give a 6+ ward save in CC rather than an extra +1 to your base armour, monsters get extra "stomp" attacks at very low initiative (and big monsters get more), and, apparently (I can't confirm this) some monstrous mounts combine their profiles with their riders somehow.

ASTREETGAMES June 20th, 2010 10:00 PM

I have a preview copy in my hands, if anyone wants to start working on a file now just email me.

Groznit Goregut July 2nd, 2010 08:42 AM

So, what's going to happen with 8th Ed? I guess that regular folk write up stuff for new Army Builder? Is someone going to write one for 8th Ed? Is someone doing it now? Will we have to wait until the new book is released to the public?

I just got Army Builder and am trying to tool around with the new 8th Ed rules. I'm hoping someone is working on the new edition.

Katie Drake July 2nd, 2010 12:51 PM

Yeah, I'm equally curious to know if anyone is currently working on updating the Fantasy datafiles to function with 8th edition.

karlhunt July 8th, 2010 02:18 PM

Wow, used to be that this place was buzzing with comments. Anyway, is anyone working on 8th ed or do we need to start a group to take care of it?

Freylis July 10th, 2010 12:36 AM

I had a go at editing the generic items and magic lores, but it's a challenge to interpret how the file has been laid out by the original author. I'm happy to contribute with any filling in of information, but if I was to update the files to 8th edition I'd probably need to start from scratch. I'd suggest waiting to hear from the original author first and take it from there.

gilvagor July 10th, 2010 03:48 AM

I'm sure the files will be out in the normal time frame...usually a month after the release of the book.

karlhunt July 10th, 2010 07:23 AM

We haven't heard anything from the author. I say we grab this project by the balls and get crackin' on it. Who's in? I've already started but with three kids it's going to take me forever to finish this thing, so I need volunteers! Drop me a line if you want to help. The more experianced the better but we can always have fresh blood do data entry.

You mean other than the second post in this thread?

karlhunt July 10th, 2010 02:14 PM

Two month old posts don't count

Katie Drake July 10th, 2010 03:24 PM

I'd be willing to help, but I'm unfortunately completely useless with Army Builder's datafile maker thing. If the data entry stuff is extremely basic I can do it. I'm also willing to make an attempt to learn more complex stuff. Please, feel free to get in touch with me if you'd like help.

karlhunt July 10th, 2010 06:58 PM

Tell you what Katie, can I get you to go into genericstuff.dat second tab labeled "Item" and change all of the spells? Hmm, we need a sharepoint site to transfer files... I'll need your e-mail and I'll see if I can't set one up.

Anyone Else? I could use people to update the Army Lists.

Katie Drake July 10th, 2010 07:06 PM

Yeah, I'll start working on that tomorrow. Sent you a PM with my email address.

karlhunt July 10th, 2010 07:16 PM

I need to get you my current file or it won't work.

Katie Drake July 10th, 2010 07:17 PM

Upload it to www.2shared.com or something. :)

karlhunt July 10th, 2010 07:31 PM

Ok, sharepoint's not going to work. I'll figure something out.

UltraPrime July 10th, 2010 11:54 PM

I'm willing to help out. I used to maintain the 40K files back in 3rd Edition, but not had much practice with ABCreator since, so a bit rusty.

karlhunt July 11th, 2010 06:35 AM

Alright, I got the percentage based army building figured out and I have figured out how to limit the specials and rares (going to do it with special characters while I'm at it). Now I need to implement it into each of the races and input the updates from the 9th at the same time.

Prime, PM me your e-mail and I'll send you what I have. Then we will figure out where to use you.

Any luck we can have this thing out by the end of the week.

Gensol July 11th, 2010 02:03 PM

You guys should really wait until the developers send this out. They said they were going to compile a new file since a lot of things have changed. You can't really expect people to have something this complicated done in 1 day since the books haven't been officially released until yesterday.

This is just MHO. I am willing to wait for proper support and an official release. Keep up the good work guys.

Kris.

karlhunt July 11th, 2010 05:18 PM

Gensol, you do realise that there is no such thing as an "official" release right? This data files are all fan created, Normally it takes about a month for somone to get an updated army book posted. I figured I'd get a head start.

karlhunt July 12th, 2010 02:51 PM

Real life just dropped a giant turd all over me so I can't work this project for the next three weeks. Is there someone I can pass my progress off to that will run with it?

silks July 13th, 2010 03:33 PM

Sent you a pm about continuing it

Lamenter 40K July 14th, 2010 01:05 AM

I'm totally new to Army Builder but I'm pretty computer savvy and pick things up quick. I've got the new rulebook on hand and if there's anything I can do to help please let me know.

silks July 14th, 2010 10:00 AM

I've been working on the new generic items and spells - will put the .dat files up here when they're done so people can start using those at least.

silks July 14th, 2010 02:33 PM

Am posting my progress and download links for .dat files on Warseer http://www.warseer.com/forums/showth...23#post4822223 I'll post on here when I have complete files

karlhunt July 14th, 2010 04:52 PM

I tried to get the Percentages to work in a combined list but I can't figure it out. The "Profiles" in the warhammer.def are not fond of if statements. It looks like we will have to branch off to make this work right.

Branch off how?

karlhunt July 14th, 2010 06:19 PM

A separate file, I am looking into some alternatives though

karlhunt July 14th, 2010 09:04 PM

Dropping this link here while I'm at it. It gives percentage based armybuilding ala 8th ed. Also Includes the Generic stuff that Silks has.

Warhammer Fantasy 8th.ab

File updated at 0014GMT 16 July

karlhunt July 16th, 2010 08:39 PM

Latest file is up, follow the above link.

ThatRickGuy July 17th, 2010 06:34 AM

When I try to open that file in AB 3.1 it tells me I need a newer version, my support option just ran out and I never saw a 3.2 upgrade :(

Yobtar; load a different game system and create a blank roster then go to the "Develop" menu and uncheck "Enable Data File Debugging" to prevent those errors. You only really need to see that stuff if you are actually editing the files themselves.

As for the files as they are: Chaos Warhounds are able to satisfy the Core requirements on their own in both the Beastman and Chaos Warrior lists; this should not be possible as they do not count towards the minimum core requirement.

Also, the "minimum three units" composition rule doesn't seem to be implemented in any of the armies I've tried; I was able to create a "valid" army consisting of a general and a single giant core unit when the minimum should be three units (core, special or rare) and a general.

Yobtar July 17th, 2010 09:44 AM

Thanks that worked

Unit size is not in use anymore, it's all % now. If you've 25% core then all is fine.

karlhunt July 17th, 2010 11:15 AM

Keep in mind that this is a work in progress, I have not even started on validation for any Chaos army yet. Also the 3 unit minumum has not been started for any army. I just figured that the community as a whole would rather get their mitts on what we had thus far rather than waiting for next month when it's finnished.

As for the script error listed above, the file I posted last night should have resolved it, if not please let me know.
