Plans for D&D 5th Edition & Hero Lab

Since the release of Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition this past summer, users have been asking if we will be supporting this new edition in Hero Lab. To clear up any speculation, we wanted to clarify our official position.

If an OGL (or SRD) if released, we will fully support D&D 5th Edition within both Hero Lab and Realm Works, to the extent that any license allows.

You can read more about our plans on our website.

Now that the last post is more than a year old I'd like to ask whether any progress is made or expected anytime soon?

That's a question you need to pose to Hasbro, not LWD.

They are not playing well with others these days, they blame the 3.x OGL on failures of 4th edition and the rise of Pathfinder. NOT the fact that 4th edition was terrible, and Pathfinder what players really wanted.

The Hero Lab supporters need to pressure Hasbro with their voice to open up. I mean Hasbro will listen to their customers right? ......

Hasbro will listen to customers who pay cash. I would think, however, that making digital content affordable, so that D&D is even more widespread, would help with sales of related—more profitable—products like miniatures, board games, video games, and even the upcoming movie. The movies is a good example. Millions of people will watch it, many of whom will never have played a TTRG. Many young people who see the movie and are interested in trying D&D may be put off but hundreds of pages of rules, but might be more willing to try if digital tools make it easier. But those tools need to be prices so that they don't become too high of a barrier for entry.

If I were Hasbro, I would be trying to get as many folks into the games as I can and they try to sell the sh*! out of minis, terrains, and other cool at-table aids, which is something Hasbro should be great at.

They are not licensing to anyone but Fantasy Grounds at the moment. This most likely is part of an exclusivity agreement with them.

They are also licensing to AltSpaceVR. Wish they would be more aggressive with licensing, but I suppose they need to protect the brand. That said, it feels that the AltSpaceVR deal is something they entered into because it sounds cool. It doesn't have much of a user base. Established software with large, active user bases like Hero Labs and RealmWorks seem like the better bet.
