Tutorial Requests

This thread is for user requests. If you have a how to request, a video you'd like to see made, or other related items, this is the place to post it! (Please note this is not a thread for feature requests, there is a separate forum for those here.)

The users making videos, how to posts, or sharing screenshots in this forum aren't LWD employees, they're just helpful users who are kind enough to share their hard work with others. So please be kind and remember they aren't obligated to pick up your request. But if we're lucky they just might! :)

Fantastic! The more resources the better :)

Agreed!

Hello, everyone, and thank you for all your wonderful videos. I was wondering, though, if any of you have done a tutorial video on how to use tags and filters intensely. I'm having problems understanding the best way to assign tags and how to filter them (especially in connection with time periods, that is, how to find all topics tagged "A" in a specific decade). Especially with the possibility of tagging snippets individually, I wonder where I'm crossing the line between profitable hard work or just waste of time.

kbs666 February 18th, 2017 12:40 PM

most people aren't doing much with time as we're all waiting for custom calendars.

I did 2 videos on tags and filtering.

Unfortunately, the timeline doesn't seem to be filtered by tags so once you have the topics filtered you'll have to go through them by hand to find the ones with the dates you care about.

Thanks kbs666, I had seen the first one but somehow had missed the most recent video. Great work!

BTW, how do you use the snippet tags vs topic tags?

kbs666 February 19th, 2017 06:58 PM

If you mean adding tags to text snippets I really don't use them.

How about a video about importing text from PDF tables into RW

Chumblybjm;)

daplunk February 25th, 2017 12:01 PM

There's really no great way to do that. The tables don't copy in well at all which means you end up copying one cell at a time.

I use MS Word as an intermediary step.
  1. Select table text in PDF
  2. Copy to clipboard
  3. Paste into Word
  4. In each row, insert a Tab between columns
  5. Select the text in Word
  6. From the ribbon, choose Insert, Table, Convert Text to Table (Tab should be set as the column separator, and Paragraph marks as the row separator automaticlly, if the formtting is correct; also, the correct number of columns should be pre-set)
  7. Proofread results
  8. Tweak as needed (apply bold to column headers, for example)
  9. Select table
  10. Copy to Clipboard
  11. Paste into snippet in Realm Works.

It is not perfect, but it beats copying cell-by-cell.

Ideally, we should be able to do this in Realm Works directly, but trying to insert a Tab moves out of the snippet, so it doesn't work.

daplunk February 25th, 2017 01:22 PM

Snap, that could be worthy of a video! :D

chumblybjm February 26th, 2017 12:08 PM

Yes that method of copying from MS Word does work.. I found it
down a page or 2 in the forum posts. I just assumed you knew
about Daplunk;) That's why I was suggesting it as a video.
Its complicated enough that it could use a video, until we have a
native RW way of doing it. But it sure beats moving the tables
of some games core rule book cell by cell.....

That's the kind of fate that some guy with with pointy horns and a tail hands
you for eternity...after you passed on...if you've been Baaaad..:(
Especially if the Devil and some other demons keep bugging you saying
your holding up their game...

Realm Works - Data Entry (Tables)

Merion March 10th, 2017 12:33 AM

I've read that daplunk uses RW in combination with maptools.

My first question: Why?
I only use RW with a TV to throw the Player View there and display NPCs, maps and the like. I guess it is to display the position of players and monsters?!

second:
A short vid on how to set that up and how to work it during a play session would be really nice!

daplunk March 10th, 2017 12:44 AM

The answer is in this picture :D

Basically I want Realm Works to be able to display pictures to the players at any time which is why i have the player facing monitor installed. Realm Works only supports output to one extra screen. I need to control 3.

MapTool is also much more efficient for controlling the map. Its also free. We use minis and roll real dice so the only purpose is to display the map and control the Fog of War.

Here's my video on MapTool.

Merion March 13th, 2017 12:55 AM

Okay, so you're not using RW for maps at all?!

I first thought you're feeding the RW output into maptools. For me, I'd prefer to work with as few tools as possible. So I', still shying away from maptools et al and am waiting for a way to show player positions in RW. Different map pins would be all I need.

daplunk March 13th, 2017 01:03 AM

I have the maps in RW and they assist greatly when running the game and i use the fog system to give the player's visibility on what they have explored via the Realm Works Player Clients.

I wish I could feed the output into any VTT, first company to support that I will sign up with.

I do prefer to minimise my tools also. But using RW as a VTT is a real drag. Especially with the size of my realm, I'm pushing RW to it's limits (1 of 2 for largest realm) which means it doesn't always change as efficiently as I would like.

MapTools is instant, and that's absolutely worth using the extra tool for.

This is an old request, but Realmworks doesnt tell time for me, just tell 'em it's tuesday.

daplunk March 20th, 2022 07:54 PM

i've moved to Obsidian.md.
That can tell me the current day and has customer calendars (although I'm still not using it lol, never had a need for custom calendars ;) )
