The Super Powers Companion (2nd edition) is Now Available!

Hi everyone,

Version 5.0 of the Savage Worlds data files, including the Super Powers Companion 2nd edition, is out now! Thanks to CapedCrusader's hard work, anyone with the SPC package is now able to create characters with SPC 2nd edition, as well as SPC 1st edition.

Zaphod Beebledoc July 18th, 2016 01:16 PM

This is really good news! Many thanks to CapedCrusader!

I have made lots of SPC2 characters using Zarlor's temporary unofficial file, and haven't yet had chance to send them to PDF or text. I need to reinstall my laptop soon so I can't do it now.

I have a copy of Zarlor's file that I downloaded last week. Would Zarlor's file work on top of the Version 5.0 file?

This might seem like sour grapes, but really isn't though.

CapedCrusader July 18th, 2016 02:21 PM

I'll defer to zarlor on the compatibility question.

zarlor July 18th, 2016 03:54 PM

No, it shouldn't be compatible for the most part. I mean some things MIGHT work, but overall it's not hard to print or pdf a sheet and just rebuild with the new, much better, setup CC made for us. I didn't get much chance to play with this yet like I've wanted to, but I'm pretty sure from what I've seen so far it will definitely be worth it to switch over. That also reminds me I need to take down my data file since I said I would when the official one was released!

SeeleyOne July 18th, 2016 06:26 PM

Yay!!!

Oh indeed not! I was vastly over-inflating in my head how many characters I had to do this for, also was aware of the impending Win 10 free upgrade cut-off on the 29th and have several things to do that are not RP related.

However, I've bitten the bullet, and after doing some research into it, upgraded to Win 10 *without* reinstalling my lappie as I wanted. I can do that soon though. Happy to say that HL is working okay, though I've just had to jump through hoops to work out how to manually reactivate my licence as if I'd used the automated feature, I would have needed to get V5 first, which is the very thing I am putting off...

Looking forward to getting some SPC2 usage v soon! :) (As soon as I've PDFed the characters...)

I'm building some characters and I can't figure out how Super Karma is supposed to work.

I'm making a Four Color hero, with Super Karma turned on. However, her Power Point total is still showing 45, not 55. A Four Color hero should get +10 PP with Super Karma turned on.

How do you get the correct number of power points to display?

EDIT: I figured this out. You have to use the Permanent Modifiers option on the Personal tab.

EricaOdd July 23rd, 2016 10:03 AM

Also, how do you make multiple Resistances a single device? Right now it looks like each element it applies to is a separate power as far as applying modifiers go, which is incorrect by my reading of the rules.

EricaOdd July 23rd, 2016 12:29 PM

Switchable doesn't seem to work right either.

If I build a 12 point power (including 2 points for Switchable), it lets me build a 12 point power to switch to. It should only let me build a 10 point power.

The power you switch to has a point cost equal to the main power minus the Switchable cost.

CapedCrusader July 23rd, 2016 12:48 PM

Erica - The extra points fort Super Karma are in a Reward on the Edges/Hindrances/Rewards tab. Since they changed it so you can use the Super Karma to give you a normal Reward instead of just the points, we added the extra Super Power Points as a Reward. This is why we had to allow Rewards to be unique now.

CapedCrusader July 23rd, 2016 12:53 PM

On Resistance, I'm not sure what you mean. There's nothing in the description that leads me to believe that multiple versions should be combined into a single power. For Super Skill, they were very specific about that, but not in Resistance. I don't see anything in the description for Device, either.
What are you getting at. here? What am I missing?

CapedCrusader July 23rd, 2016 12:57 PM

On Switchable, you're correct. It is supposed to use the total without the Switchable cost. I'll fix that. Thanks!

EricaOdd July 23rd, 2016 01:28 PM

Oh, I didn't notice that. Sorry.

CapedCrusader July 23rd, 2016 01:39 PM

Oh, no worries. It's something I should have given a heads up on, and now you've allowed me to do that. Thanks!

I could be wrong... it's happened before. :D

Don't judge me! I'm sick! I'm on cold medicine! The stars are not aligned! :p

Cool. For the time being I've just been building the power without adding the Switchable (alternate) modifier first to make sure my points add up, then adding the modifier.

SeeleyOne July 23rd, 2016 05:12 PM

Just an idea: A mechanic could add the points for you without having to take a reward. But either way works.

Another question... I've given a character the Trademark Weapon Edge via the Super Edge power. I'm getting two validation errors. One is "Trademark Weapon: duplicate weapon selected," and the other is "Trademark Weapon: You must choose an option."

I'm not sure where the first one is coming from, but for the second one I can't seem to find where I need to go to enter the weapon option for Trademark Weapon. The Edge tab is highlighted red, but that Edge doesn't appear there for me to fill it in.

Can I suggest that the Reward is renamed slightly. Maybe to Super Power Points (Karma)

I must admit I was scratching my head for a few moments trying to work out the same thing.

SeeleyOne July 24th, 2016 01:29 PM

Whatever, I recognized it right off. But that was after reading the comments here. :) You can keep the id the same, but renaming how it appears as Zaphod recommends might be a good idea.

EricaOdd July 24th, 2016 04:49 PM

Two questions:

1. I see that there's a modifier for Super Sorcery, to give yourself a power as a spell. In a future update, could something like that be done for the Invent power, too?

2. How do you add Super Power Points to minions? I can make a minion easily enough using the NPC option of the Configure Hero menu, but how do you give them Power Points purchased via the Minions power? When you add the AB Super Powers, it defaults to giving them 10 pp if I don't have a power level checked.

CapedCrusader July 25th, 2016 06:03 PM

1) Hmmm... I don't see why not.

2) Give them the AB, and then adjust the number of Power Points available with a Permanent Adjustment. How are you creating the Minions? If you use the Allies tab, it should inherit all those settings from the Hero. If you are only getting the 10, make sure it's not the basic Super Powers you are seeing as opposed to the Super Powers Companion Super Powers.

EricaOdd July 25th, 2016 07:31 PM

When I use the Allies tab, I don't see a Super Powers tab for them even if I give them power points using an adjustment on the Personal tab. If they are inheriting the power points from the Minion power on the main hero, then there's no option to spend them as the Super Powers tab isn't showing up.

When I give them the Super Powers edge, they get 45 points (I have the 4-color option chosen). I can only apply -9 Power Points via the adjustment on the Personal tab, so I can't get them down to their low PP level.

Edit: I can get them down in PP by adding multiple instances of a -9 PP adjustment.

CapedCrusader July 26th, 2016 01:40 PM

Ah, OK. I had removed the filter that limited it to +9. I also need to fix the one for -9 as well. Thanks!

So, I've been trying to wrap my head around using HL for supers by trying to build the NPCs as PCs, but I run into chicken and egg problems, where I'm not sure what a character bought with Advancements vs what they had as a starting character. Is there a good guide for how to take characters from sourcebooks and properly build them?

Thanks

zarlor December 28th, 2016 09:48 AM

Not really, and it may not really be possible in some sense anyway because, technically, NPC do not have to meet the same rule requirements as PCs (as is mentioned with some regularity on the Pinnacle forums.) Now Archetypes SHOULD follow the rules, but they don't necessarily always do so. Mostly, though, Advances shouldn't throw you too many loops and I wouldn't call that a Supers issue anyway (since Advances are going to happen after all Super Power Points get spent, except in the rarer instance when using something like the "Rising Stars" setting rule, which personally I don't recommend using anyway having played several campaigns with and without that setting rule.) While it is true that some Advances can affect some super powers (most notably Super Attribute and Super Skill) overall the Advances shouldn't throw you too big of a loop trying to figure out.

Probably the best place to ask about that would be the Pinnacle forums, though, or on the forums for the sourcebook you are getting your NPCs from, with which NPCs in particular you are running into issues with. Lots of helpful and experienced folks who may be able to help walk you through a few of the examples, or you could try starting a new thread here (I wouldn't use this one since, IMHO, it's really more for specific questions or issues with the new SPC2 data file update rather than more generic questions like that.)

Paragon December 30th, 2016 02:57 PM

Yeah, that's more of an issue of running into a few of the order-of-operations things you can occasionally hit with SW than an issue with the software, per se.

CapedCrusader January 6th, 2017 12:16 PM

Which NPC's are you trying to create? I've run into that a lot, where they don't necessarily use the PC character creation rules to create NPC's.

Superpowers Companion struggle

Hi-

Is there some box on the creator that I should be checking to access the SPC-2? I have been clicking the SPC-2 box (although it used to work) it is not currently populating a super powers tab. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?

Thanks!

dragonwithlotus January 13th, 2017 07:04 PM

Please disregard. I came to my senses!

texaspoet February 14th, 2017 02:53 PM

Was running Supers 2nd Edition at OwlCon this last weekend and I noticed that the Armor power was working correctly but the language was wrong on the character sheet - it still said 3 points of Armor per level (from 1st edition) instead of 2 points, per 2nd Edition.

CapedCrusader February 14th, 2017 05:34 PM

Yep, thanks, I've got that fixed for the next update... good eyes!

dartnet March 15th, 2017 06:54 PM

Any idea when we will see the next update?

CapedCrusader March 16th, 2017 07:48 PM

It's at Lone Wolf getting reviewed.

Paragon March 24th, 2017 10:16 PM

There appear to be some output problems with this. I just built a character, and the melee damage from his Attack, Melee power isn't showing at all, and the Attack, Ranged damage is showing one die lower than it should if the power is toggled off.

CapedCrusader March 25th, 2017 02:45 AM

OK, found and fixed. Now they'll all work the same. It'll go out with this update.

Paragon March 25th, 2017 08:21 AM

Cool. I'm surprised someone hadn't reported that before.

Der Rote Baron August 1st, 2017 01:14 PM

How do I add Super Power Points after a level increase - e.g. from Novice to Seasoned - to get better or to get a new power?

zarlor August 1st, 2017 02:43 PM

By default you don't, since SPC2 doesn't allow it by standard rules as written. However, there is a settings rule for it, you just have to select the Rising Stars option from the Character Configuration screen (Character -> Configure Character if you're already working on an existing character to get that screen back up.)
