Lord of the Rings

Am I the only guy that has been waiting for an update for Lord of the
Rings?

If so then maybe I can help. I have - using the previous authors
info - prepared an update that I think is useable. I DID change some
of the previous authors (ie; Helm's Deep author) information and
updated some of the card data that I thought was incorrect
and 'fixed' accents on various names/text of various cards. Further -
I noticed when going thru the previous/current db (lotr2.4 from
APRIL 2003)that some information on Unique cards was missing - and
updated that info. (ie; Aragorn - Ranger of the North was not listed
as Unique ((the dot)) there were others as well). What I don't know
is that if someone was to use my update if that would trash their
inventory. I suspect so but don't know for sure. In either case -
IMHO the data was incorrect. Rightly or wrongly I have - I believe -
updated the information.

So the question/s as follows: Is someone already doing all this? I
don't particularly wish to step on anyones toes over this. If not -
should I post my version - I have called it lotrV3.0. I wouldn't
mind being the author if no one else wants it. Though I have a full
time job I don't believe that too much time would go by between
updates. AND finally, should I post it? If so how do I go about
doing this? Some feedback would be extremely helpful.

Thanx

Nope.

From what I can determine there are 2 independent authors for LotR
in Card Vault, which doesn't seem to make sense. One of them sent
me his latest data files some time back, and the other offered to let
me take over.

I think "the powers that be" ought to take control of this, and let us know
who the author is, and when an official update can be expected (please....)

I'm up for my annual renewal of Card Vault, and if Lone Wolf can't
take the time to pay someone to do this on a regular basis (offer
them free license, something else, etc), it seems that I can
probably do better to just wait for World's Appart Collection
Manager to be complete for LOTR (if it ever comes out).

It's frustrating - love the LOTR TCG and I have some of the older,
discontinued games, but it seems like this program, with the
combination of multiple issues due to me getting a new computer,
updates, licensing issues this past year... and now, most
importantly, not getting updated card lists - makes me wonder if I
should continue it. I love the idea of it, but if the primary
product/use of the program is reliant upon volunteers to "step up"
each release - just no guarantee of being able to use it for what I
need it for.

Sorry for the rant - keep up the good discussions!
Kaleb...

PS. Anyone working on a Middle Earth skin? ;)

PPS. I like the "idea" of this program so much I'll probably
continue to support it.

datafile authors do get a free license. Interested in taking over the
LOTR files? send an email to rob bowes.

The problem with LotR is that Decipher has thus far declined to give us
permission to work on the data files ourselves. While this is speculation,
my guess is that they see us as potential competition to Worlds Apart, even
though I believe the two products could complement each other quite well.

The net result of this is that we have to find a volunteer to do it. The
person who originally did all the LotR files ran into personal time
constraints that forced him to stop doing the files. Since then, we've not
found another volunteer. If anyone is interested in taking over the effort,
we'll be happy to offer whatever help we can, but we're unfortunately stuck
right now.

For the majority of games, we have an established relationship with the
publisher. The publisher provides us with the spoiler data directly and we
then do the data files. In a variety of cases, volunteers have elected to
tackle game systems before we could get to them, and we give them all the
support we can, including free product licenses.

Unfortunately, for LotR, we don't currently have a volunteer and we aren't
able to do the work ourself. I can wholly understand your frustration with
the lack of updates. Please realize that it's quite frustrating on our end
as well. :-(

I hope this explanation helps a bit. If anyone has suggestions on this
issue, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks, Rob

It might help if all of us who use Card Valut for LOTR write to decipher
(and the fan club if you are a member) and complain about this. After all,
we use CV to help us with our LOTR collection.

I have NEVER been able to understand the mindset of some of those Co's.

I have the time - for the most part - and I have the ability - I think. I have created an updated data file for Lord of the Rings. It works for me - but as I stated in a previous msg - I'm concerned that correcting some of the data from older sets would make some peoples inventories get a hiccup. For example - there were several cards in the data files that were supposed to be 'unique' and were not actually listed that way. I have gone back and corrected these items - but it's only been tested on my system. But I didn't have an inventory file (I use CV for deck building and not for inventory - yet)

Everything seems fine but I would like for someone to back up all of their data and check out my update. If it checks out and I'm not shown to be a complete idiot then I would enjoy doing the updates. Just tell me what I need to do - who to do it with and I'll get the ball rolling. Again - I would like for someone to check my work first to see if it tracks out ok.

Thanx

Lord of the Rings

This is great news!!!

We've already got the tool in place to let you check the "safety" of your
changes! It's called CVCheck and it's installed along with the Authoring
Kit. I recommend doing the following:

1. Install the latest published LotR files into a new folder. You can do
this during import by clicking on the "Change" button and specifying a new
folder.
2. Run CVCheck on the freshly installed files, doing a Scan. This takes a
snapshot of all the critical information that could be inadvertently messed
up with changes.
3. Copy all of your changed LotR files into the new folder, overwriting all
the old files.
4. Load the files into CV to make sure everything is working correctly.
5. Run CVCheck again, doing a Compare this time. You'll receive a report of
anything that has changed that might impact a user's inventory.

CVCheck should be used by all data file authors before releasing a new
update. This makes it easy to verify that changes to a new release won't
mess up things for users, and it takes the uncertainty out of it for the
authors.

Contact me directly at rob@wolflair.com so that I can get your appropriate
information and I can set you up with an author account. You can then
release updates to the LotR files automatically, with all users being
notified via the updates mechanism.

Thanks, Rob
