The latest files don't have this issue, and I don't think Colen has any intent of going back and redoing everything using the old V1.4 mechanisms. V2.0 has made things much easier for him to write the 40K files. Is there a way that you could start hosting the V2 data files in ADDITION to the V1.4 files on your site? Also, there needs to be a way to advise users when they are running into an issue with out-of-date files and inform them that the new files are required to solve the problem.
