Savage Settings data files
We've begun releasing data files for select Savage Settings directly through Hero Lab! In case you missed the announcement in our newsletter, you can find it here.
The Savage Settings are listed in the Update Mechanism Window in Hero Lab. From the Select a Game window, click on the "Find Updates" button. This will open a window listing available updates. You'll see items in the list that begin with "Savage Settings:", after which the Setting name is listed. Select the entry for the Setting(s) you'd like, and click the "Download" button. After Hero Lab has downloaded the update, you'll see the "Import New Data Files Into Hero Lab" window. Simply click the "Start Import" button to bring the files into Hero Lab. If the data file author updates the data file after you've imported it, you'll see an indication that an update is available. |
A note on these newly available updates... These files have been re-factored to comply with naming rules for the unique ids of everything. These changes were necessary to avoid collisions between data sets. This way, different Settings can have an item with the same name that doesn't act the same way.
The arcane power Succor is a good example. In Savage Worlds Deluxe and the Fantasy Companion, Succor can be used on anyone, including the caster. In Deadlands: Reloaded, the caster may not use it on themselves. In other Settings, the caster can use it on themselves but at a penalty for each point of Wounds or Fatigue they have. Since they all have different effects, they each needs their own record. These changes affect the names the system uses in the background, and for the most part should be invisible to everyone. This way, data file authors don't have to play "who named it first?" when writing data files. It's a necessary step as these files are set up for automatic updates. The changes were pretty extensive, so if you encounter any oddness in using these new files, please let us know. |
A data file for Rippers is now available through the Updates Mechanism in Hero Lab. As with the previous Settings that have been built and shared directly through Hero Lab by a member of the user community, this Setting is available as a free download and was released through Hero Lab with the permission of Pinnacle.
See the first post in this thread for information on how to access the Rippers data file! |
Hi,
I have been trying to download the Ripper's data file and I keep getting the following message: The selected file is not a valid import file for Hero Lab. If the file was downloaded, it was likely corrupted, so please try downloading the file again. any thoughts? Thanks! Ron |
I'm getting the same thing on all the Savage Settings downloads.
|
Same problem here.
|
If you get an error message, please try again another time. The files are on one of my websites that's hosted on a server farm somewhere near Seattle. They've been having issues with the servers up there and it's been up and down way more than usual lately. I've had this site on these servers for over 15 years and have never had problems like this before. I sincerely apologize for any difficulties downloading the Savage Worlds Setting files.

Setting file issue
I downloaded an update for Savage Worlds on Hero Lab, but now I can't seem to use any Savage Settings I have (They do not appear under the user content on the Character Configuration Screen). Have you changed their locations? Or are they incompatible with version 2.5?

I've had no issues with mine. :( Everything is still in the same location as it ever was, too. If you don't want to wait for an official response you might try doing a re-install and seeing if that fixes it (be sure to back up any of your own .user files, though!)
|
Mine works fine also, I'm up to date on the program as well. So sorry I'm at a loss as to why your doesn't work.

I meant re-installing the whole program, not the user files. Kind of the equivalent to the usual advice given in my job (IT) about Windows machines... "Turn it off and turn it back on again."

Thanks for trying to help, Zarlor! |
Glad it's all back to normal, I understand the panic, been there and done that. LOL

so, apparently my spam folder went on an aggressive rampage.
I may have the Hellfrost files |
I'm the source for Hellfrost...

Um, I can't get any settings to work either.
I've downloaded them several times, restarted Hero Lab several times, before and after I've downloaded the settings files, but nothing showing in the configuration. Do I need to uninstall and re-install Hero Lab in it's entirety? Thanks for any advice... Arlyansor |
Did you do a non-standard install or something? Is this on a Mac or PC? Are we talking about using the normal updater to download Savage Settings or are these other settings you downloaded?
|
If no Settings are appearing, are you getting any error messages when the Savage Worlds module starts? Errors in any .user file will prevent all of them from loading.
|
I've downloaded everything through the Hero Lab downloader.
This is for a PC, and I've had no real issues with Hero Lab before on anything I've downloaded. When the Savage Worlds module starts, I get the following message: "The data files could not be loaded due to errors. Hero Lab will now attempt to load them in recovery mode. Once loaded, you can access the editor as normal to correct any errors. Thing 'spcNELair' - Child entity 'SPCPower' does not exist Thing 'vhNEASeaho' - Bootstrap thing 'wpTorpedo' does not exist Another SEVEN Bootstrap things Preclude - Reference to non-existent thing 'wpPistolBl' I'm guessing these all come from the Necessary Evil data files... Is there a way to delete just these data files? Thanks again, Arlyansor. |
Ah, that's the problem. OK, are all of the errors your are getting ones with "NE" in the name? If so then it could just be Necessary Evil. It looks like maybe you don't have the Super Powers Companion add-on? If so Necessary Evil will not work, it NEEDs the Super Powers Companion. To deleted the file just go to where your .user files are stored (mine are located at C:\ProgramData\Hero Lab\data\savage) you can delete the one for NE.1st and NE.user.

Aaaah,
Thank you zarlor! This was needlessly traumatic and time consuming. Maybe HL needs a simpler mechanism to remove downloaded content? Thanks again for the help everyone provided. Arlyansor |

Just a quick question (and I apologize if it's already been covered): Is the new/updated info from Stone and a Hard Place going to be (or already has been) added to the data set?
|
The one Zarlor posted is not the Official data set. CC dose the official set, and that one is on his list to update after SFC and SPC2ed.
|
Thank you for the update.
|
I thought I had posted a response here, but I guess it got lost. :) But yes, as mentioned in my announcement of that data file in another thread, certainly the data file I've made available does have Stone and a Hard Place in it (although there is an Errata out now that I need to look at for any further updates) is not in any way and official data file. I cannot guarantee that any characters made with it will ever work correctly in the official file once it is released and I am not the official writer/supporter of the DLR file.
That being said, Caped Crusader has said that he is working on an update to the file, but since that is a free file while the Sci-Fi Companion and Super Powers Companion 2 files will be pay file they are taking precedent over updating the DLR file, so it may be a while before we get an official update there. I have given him directly the link to the file I've done as well, which has updates for Last Sons, and The Flood as well as Stone and a Hard Place so some of the things in my file may make it to the official release. In other words any characters created with it may be partially or possibly even fully compatible with the official version, I just have no idea how CC will want to work with the file I sent him and what improvements he will likely make to it. |
Has any thought been given to Nova Praxis for SW? Or the Sci-fi sourcebook?
|
It'd be a good bit of work; it diverges from common SW usage in several ways.
|
Just a note: while not official, I do have an updated version of the datafile for Broken Earth; if anyone is interested, just PM me and I'll send you a link.
|
Hiya
I'm getting a similar problem to Arlyansor in that my Savage Worlds data files aren't being recognised. I'm on a PC, with the right licence and install. But once I installed the latest big update for Savage worlds, it lost all my extra worlds. (Which is a pain as i'm playing Deadlands!) :) I have all the companion updates and it worked fine before the new update. Any help appreciated! :) |
Do you get any error messages when you start the program at all?
Is everything working but the User Settings are showing any more? Have you downloaded the most recent version of the Setting files? Some were recently updated. |

That is very weird, I updated and mine is fine. All of mine are showing up and they work perfectly.
|
OK, which update are we talking about? The last Savage Worlds update, or the update to Hero Lab itself?
And - What Happens. as exactly as you can describe it? |
