Unofficial Hero Lab Authoring Kit Manual

While studying up on Hero Lab and, specifically, authoring for Hero Lab, I found myself a touch frustrated with the official pdf at http://www.wolflair.com/download/hp/hl_kit.pdf. I'm guessing it was automatically generated from the wiki itself, which lead to it being some 761 pages long, with tons of whitespace and without a proper pdf table of contents. So, in part to ameliorate this frustration, in part to help me understand the content itself, I decided to create my own pdf of the work (I'm a former technical writer... so this sorta thing is actually 'fun' for me). I also took the liberty to correct some grammatical mistakes that had snuck in because, well, because. The result is 'only' 453 pages (I included the Authoring Examples, mostly because they're extremely useful and, well, you can always cut off printing at page 239 if you don't want it).

Anyways, I figured I'd make the results generally available to the community. If the guys at Lone Wolf feel I'm stepping on toes with this, I'll happily take it down and/or modify it as requested.

Here's the link.

Comments/suggestions/criticisms are welcome.

Wow. That is an awful lot of work. Thank you for putting the time and effort into this! I am still reading, so I don't have any helpful feedback yet ;D

I vote that this get a sticky or something.

AMAZING simple put you have done a wonderful amount of work and details into this and it looks great. I can not wait to start paging thorough it to see how to finish some of the projects I have started and that are currently stuck at different points.

Thank you

Thanks for creating this document and making it availabe. Now if I only knew what I was doing...(just keep reading, just keep reading)...and combing through all the files. It takes time, but this manual really helps!

It's a bit sad that this is still, as best I can tell, the latest documentation. But indeed, thank you. I just happened on this topic. Now, I just need to find a way to make it readily readable on the Kindle...

Calibre can convert PDFs to other formats including some of the Kindle formats (not sure if it can convert to the newer ones without a plugin) but PDFs don't always convert very cleanly, particularly images.

{nods} I suspect I'll have better luck taking the extracted HTML and building my own book to import.

There is an Unofficial Hero Lab Authoring Kit PDF that you can download to learn how to use.

Noctifer is the one who linked the PDF but the website domain is not active. I have the PDF with me.

Download at your pleasure.

The link provided will not download the file until I install Chrome extension(s) that I don't want.

Is there another less idiotic location that I can obtain the pdf?

edit: nm, I just managed to get the pdf by apparently clicking in a different order (I guess).

Now that they have finally repaired the HL import to Realm Works functionality I am here to see if this is still relevant. I remember trying to work with the Authoring kit and install a non standard system a while back but gave up on it because it was pretty complex. Someone told me it was painfully difficult for a programmer but next to impossible for someone who isn't a programmer.

I am not a programmer but I do have limited experience in javascript...lol

Has anyone ever figured out the authoring system well enough to add completely add a non supported system?

We have several mostly completed systems. I got far enough for my purposes for Planet Mercenary, although I haven't touched it in years.

https://archive.org/details/HeroLabAuthoringKitWiki also has a copy for in case the domain goes down again.
