I am a veteran WH 40k player and one of my friends showed me army builder.

The problem is I don't wish to purchase it if I have to buy a new one in the next few weeks when the new 5th edition rule book comes out.

When 5th edition comes out will army builder be obsolete?

The team who's still making the 40k data files made the transition between 3rd and 4th some years ago.

Besides, there are very few things in the codexes that change with the new edition. Changing from 4th to 5th within the AB datafiles will probably be a matter of re-writing some of the text, rather than fundamental changes to point values/available options/etc.

Army Builder can't become obsolete in the way you suggest; it doesn't care about rules, or editions or anything like that. Even if the 5th edition rules moved 40k over to the starship Troopers system, AB wouldn't care. It's just another datafile. Witness the variety of systems that currently have AB files: Not just every GW game, including Specialist games and, of all things, Aeronautica Imperialis, but also Starship Troopers, War Machine, Babylon 5 and Confrontation to name but a few.

When is the 5th edition data file expected to be released?

We always apply a minimum of one month wait on any new book releases so it wont be for short while yet sorry

Unfortunately there is more to a change of this scale than a few tweaks - it will take a bit longer than expected

What's a bit longer? Can you give an ETA? A best guess, maybe?

Thanks..

not as yet sorry, we are sorting a plan now and making sure that all users are kept informed and updated. Various changes need to be made in the background as well

Announcements will go up in the next few days about what is going to happen though so keep an eye on here or www.ab40k.org
