View Full Version : Skills miscalc for Barbarians (D&D)

When I create a barbarian with INT 10 (modifier 0), I should only get 16 skill points ((4+ INT mod) X 4), HL 1.0d instead gives 20.
Likewise, when I level up, I should only get 4 skill points (4+ INT mod), but HL gives 5.

It would appear that HL considers an INT 10 as having a modifier of +1, instead of 0.

From my testing, HL is working correctly. I create a new portfolio, add a level of Barbarian, and my skill points are the correct value of 16. I increase the intelligence to 12 and they go up to 20.

What this likely means is that you added something during experimentation that is still lurking around and/or that HL didn't do a proper job of deleting/disabling. It's most likely the latter. Since a saved portfolio should save everything you currently have added, it should include whatever is lurking around that is causing the wrong adjustment. Please send me the portfolio (helpdesk at wolflair.com) and I'll poke through it in the debugger to find out what's causing the problem.

If you need a "fix" right away, you can get things to work correctly by creating a new portfolio. I say this only because this particular bug could easily take a fair bit of time to chase down. If I can figure out the problem quickly, I'll get a bug fix release out this weekend, but I'm not sure that's feasible.

Thanks, Rob

Just curious, but is your barbarian human?

Sounds like a human barbarian to me. :)

It's a half orc barbarian. And I tried to create a new portfolio, when I realized the problem, and it did the same thing. I installed the HL 1.0c and then used the built in upgrade tool to go to 1.0d. I haven't done any editting of the software at this point because of the portfolio saving problem in 1.0c.

I just created a Half-orc BAR portfolio brand new, I assigned a name, alignment, race and class, then bumped the INT up to 10. At this point, the skill points show 20, instead of 16. Perhaps it’s due to the half-orc INT reduction?

The .por file has been sent to the helpdesk email account.

Please hang tight just a little bit longer. Colen will hopefully be able to get back to you on this on Monday. I've flagged this to him, but we're pushing hard to get the next release done that will include basic class editing.

Thanks for the patience,
Rob

Ok thanks. Not trying to be pushy, just wanted to make sure I didn't get lost.

I talked to Colen about this problem this afternoon. He's got a theory and he's investigating it now.

Hey guys,

Just letting you know that I worked out what's causing this problem,
but didn't manage to get the fix in for the v1.0e release. A fix
should definitely be in for the next release, as well as fixes for a
few other bugs that we've had reported but didn't have time to focus
on, as we were getting the class editing stuff out the door.

Thanks for your patience!
