Okay, CV is still crashing when I mess around with what's viewed. Specifically, I'm trying to add the rarity field to the MK inventory. I've copy and pasted the error message below. I don't know how much help it will be to you, but if we can figure out what's wrong, I greatly appreciate having a working copy.

Then, I tried just moving the Rarity tag up by Release without even switching it to viewed yet and it crashed again. Here's the error message from that one:

Alright, I've just been playing around with the Star Wars TCG files, inputting inventory, messing with filters, views, column sizes, and I can't get it to crash like in MK. Then, I switched to the MK data, went to inventory, and checked the box to make Rarity viewable, and it immediately crashed. And its not just rarity, whenever I try to mess with the vies at all in MK, CV crashes. I'm beginning to think its the MK files themselves.

I can't reproduce this in any way. Can anyone else???

It's possible that this problem is specific to a particular flavor of
Windows. What version are you using? Also, are you using the V1.3 data
files for MK?

Please tell everything you can about your environment so that we can try to
setup an equivalent system here to test this. Tell me the O/S (e.g.
Win98SE), the graphics card, the video resolution (e.g. 800x600), the
graphics display depth (8-bit, 24-bit, etc.), and anything else you can
think of that might be useful.

Until we can reproduce it on this end, it's virtually impossible for us to
actually isolate the problem and fix it.

And if anyone else is running into this problem, please let us know!!

Thanks, Rob

I just had an idea on this. Load the MK files, go into Inventory, then open
the View form. Before doing anything else, click on the Reset button and
reset the view. Then click OK to save the reset state. Now exit CV.

Now go back into CV and try mucking with the Views again. If the problem is
corrected, there was somehow something bizarre being cached from before,
although I'm not sure what specifically caused it. This is just a hunch to try.

Let me know if this works,
Rob

OK, I did what you said, and everything worked fine, I was able to change them around all I wanted. So I set it up how I wanted, then closed out of CV to go back to checking my email. Well, I went out for a bit and just got back. I turned on my PC to check my mail again, and on a hunch opened up CV. I went into MK's inventory and messed with the views, and it crashed again. This is what happened last time. It seems I can change them however I want once, then if I go back later to change them, it'll start crashing.

I've played around even more with the SW TCG files trying to get them to crash in the same way, but I can't. The only thing I can think of is that its a problem with the MK files specifically, and not CV in general.

To answer your questions, I have the latest MK files, I run Win98SE, I have an S3 Virge video card, I'm running at 800x600, and I'm not sure of the depth, how do I find this out?

I'll try to crash some other datafiles doing the same thing, and if any others crash, I'll let you know.

Wow. I have NO idea why this might be occurring. I have not been able to
reproduce any problems with MK thus far. We'll have to try it out until
Win98 and see whether things behave differently.

Has anyone else encountered this at all???

To determine the display depth, right-click on the Desktop, then select
Properties. Select the Settings tab. There should be a droplist that
specifies the number of colors. Tell me that number. This is important,
since it can dictate which graphics are being used and how.

Thanks, Rob

nope. One of my machines run 98SE and no problems. I tried to repro the
problem, but no effect.

What about checking the versions of all the controls used in the
inventory screen vs. the ones installed on his 'puter. He might have a
newer control that is behaving strangely.

(Just guessing here).

He should also list the other programs running /resident at the same
time as the problem. It may be one of them.

CV doesn't use a single external control. Everything uses the Windows API
exclusively. So CV is self-contained, and there aren't external variables
to worry about. Well, except for the internet API provided by the
"wininet.dll" DLL. But there's no UI with that, so that's definitely not
the problem. :-(

And a good one for most products out there. :-)

load cardvault, get it to crash, close it out (if it hangs).

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL (only once) and list every program listed there. Not
all your resident programs are visible in the system tray.

I was playing around with Card vault 1.1, I discovered that when managing
inventory when you take out what is visable to the user it works fine, that
is you make it so all but the card # is visable. But if you left the, (just
an example as it happened with various combinations), card name card #, and
inventory have andn wanted, it worked fine agian. Then using said example I
went back in and removed the inventory wanted - the CV crashed.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I run windows xp.

I understand that. Here's the list exactly as they appear. I can't actually do a ctrl+alt+delete while the error message is up, so here they are from right after CV closes:

Explorer
Iam
Mmhotkey
Systray
Hokhidkc

Iam is Internet Answering Machine, and Mmhotkey and hokhidkc is my keyboard.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. It doesn't crash the first time I mess with the views, but when I go back in later and modify it again that's when it crashes. Which game system is this happening to you in? It keeps happening in the Mage Knight files to me.

What other details can you tell us of your system? Please tell us
everything you can about your environment so that we can try to setup an
equivalent system here to test this. Which graphics card, video resolution
(e.g. 800x600), graphics display depth (8-bit, 24-bit, etc.), and so on are

you using?

Thanks,

I've been beating my head against this one, and so has Colen, but we've
come up with nothing so far. You say that it only has to do with inventory
QUANTITIES. That's something that we haven't zeroed in on, but we HAVE
tested it some. However, it's possible that the situation only occurs when
you have certain values in the inventory. If that's the case, it will be an
accident for us to uncover the necessary values.

So.... Please send us your inventory file. This applies to all of you that
are having the crash problem within CV's Views. To locate the file we need,
do the following.

1. Go to the folder where you installed Card Vault (default is "c:\cardvault").
2. Go to the "data" sub-folder. You'll see additional folders for every
game system that you've installed.
3. Go to the sub-folder for the game system that is crashing.
4. Identify the file named "inv.cvz". That's the file we need.

Send the inventory data to me OFF-LIST. Send it to rob@wolflair.com. Be
sure to specify in the email which game system the inventory is associated
with so that we can test it correctly.

Then keep your fingers crossed that this uncovers the problem. :-)

Thanks, Rob

I've been going crazy with this error. I've re-entered my inventory
twice already for my Marvel HC. Everytime I try to hide
the "Release" column on the Inventory page it crashes......

I've even deleted the game system and re-downloaded the datafiles,
that didn't work either.

If anyone has figured this one out I'd appreciate a little guidance.

Thanks,

- Tony

I posted a message here a couple weeks ago that specifically asked for
additional information from everyone encountering this problem. We have a
theory and need some additional info, but we can't reproduce the problem on
any of our systems, so we're reliant on your help in testing out the theory.

The title of the post was "For Those of You Experiencing the Crash
Problem!" and was posted on 3/12/03. I have not received any of the
requested info from you yet. Please take the time to review this message
and get me the results that were requested.

Send the info to me directly at rob@wolflair.com. Please do NOT post it here.

Thanks, Rob

I was having a similar problem, and this seems to have fixed it for
me...
